Things that go bump in the night: A Halloween story

This is a true story. Last year around Halloween, if you remember, I had an experience with a giant evil cockroach. This year, well it was something similar...just a different type of evil.

about a week ago, must a been 2 AM, maybe 3, I get awaken by a noise to the right side of my bed. Kind of like a light bump against the wooden night stand. Didn't think much of it as I was pretty sleepy. My first thought was it may have been an old computer monitor sitting next to the night stand. The windows were open (it only gets down to 50 or so this time of year), and when the room cools, things start to creek...especially wooden furniture. Anyway, I'm almost back to sleep when it happens again. Not quite as loud, but still not a normal sound I'm used to hearing. Now I'm wide awake. Thoughts are running through my mind...like should I play like I'm sleeping?...or should I jump out of bed into my attack mode? I squint one eye over to the right...nothing/nobody there...I SLOWLY turn my head...nothing to see in the moonlight. I keep a shotgun under the bed, but it would take me about 30 seconds to get a good grip on it. I scan the room without moving much, but there seems to be no sign of an intruder. Maybe they/it is in the other room by now? So I silently as possible turn on the overhead light. Nothing. The breeze is coming in from the open window. The screen is still intact. The only other way someone could come in is from the front room window, but I checked it out too...screen intact. So, as I ponder if maybe I was dreaming, I look over at the night stand where the sound was coming from. There IT was.....................................a MF'ing green frog! It looked like it was smiling...happy to see me awake. Was it laughting because it woke me? I don't know as I can't get it to answer me. I guess it came in the open door a few hours earlier. I keep the door open this time of year until bed time.

Now the decision. Do I just forget about it until morning? Or chase it around the bedroom until caught? I'll take one shot at him/her/it. (how can you tell the sex of a green frog?) I keep a huge supply of 7-11 slurpee cups in the kitchen...the HUGE 44 oz kind. So I grap one and try to "cup" the frog. I GET IT ON THE FIRST TRY!!! So I put a shoe on top of the cup to keep it from jumping (this seems to be a pretty strong green frog). As I fall back to sleep, I can hear it bumping its head against the cup. Ha ha, I get the last laugh.

Well, long story short...I let the green frog go the next morning. And, wouldn't you know it...today it jumped RIGHT BACK INTO THE HOUSE as I was watching the baseball game.

That's a good story. That's a really good story.

We had a patio umbrella blow up and out of our patio table and it landed on the roof during a windy night. We heard a thud and we heard something slowly dragging/moving on the roof. We live in the country outside of Milwaukee. We have 5 acres in the near Milwaukee countryside. No one drives out here after 11PM....no one ever knocks on the door after 8 PM...our neighbors would call if they needed to stop by after 8 PM.

A large something or someone was dragging or moving on the roof. I understand your story because I was really scared. All my hunting stuff is locked up in the basement. I'm on the second story in bed with my wife with little kids down the hall. 2AM and it sounds like a body is being dragged on the roof. What the hell??

Spooky stuff when something goes bump in the night. More spooky when it bumps and bumps and bumps.

Good story.

John

Hello! ma ragtime gal,
Send me a kiss by wire,

If you refuse me,

Then you'll be left alone;

Here's one. Our house is a 1926 Craftsman. Quite often we will hear a sharp knock in the kitchen, usually at night, but not always. I have gone in to look around, but never see anything out of place. I started tapping on the cabinets and found a small pantry door that matches the pitch in my head. But I can't for the life of me figure out how the sound is made. Whooo-eeeee-iiiiiiiii-oooooooo.

Yeah, nightime magnifies your imagination by at least 10 fold. Especially when you're in a tent and you hear something moving around outside!!! A mouse sounds like a bear.

Looks like boneguy did Deaf Eddie. Amphibians are cool (no scientific pun intended).

My mom woke me up one night. She kept hearing something. She had a pistol and I could see the cigarette in her hand shaking in the dark. It turned out to be a cricket stuck in a trash can. We probably wouldn't have heard it during the day...

That visual cracked me up... somehow, I knew you lived in Texas before I looked at you location. You could easily be describing a few people I know around here.
