Are stun guns legal in the UK? Might be something to add to the gig gear if they are if you're expecting anything else like that from that club.

How about a B+ cable from the amp?

No offense to Papa Joe (not like he's in control of this), but Pontiac is a bigger s***hole than Detroit anymore. Played a show out there once, and every car in the parking lot had a window busted out.

EVERY car.

And the Pontiac police wouldn't even file reports so insurance could sort it out.

I can't stand Pontiac after that.

I've been playing bars in Texas since I was 15 years old (I got in because the female lead singer told them I was her son) and although I have seen a few fist fights, and an occasional beer mug shattered over someone's head, I have never seen a gun pulled on someone. I really hate how people think that because we are allowed to owned guns, people are running around shooting people all the time. If we weren't allowed to have them, the criminals would still get them.

Do have dudes over there called bouncers? There was this one bouncer though at a local club and he didn't do a good job. Girls, yes girls, got into fights over him. I don't know what he said or did that caused this type of behavior. There were no other clubs among the many out there that had any violence problem outside of this one and this particular bouncer.

We had plenty of punk rock and heavy metal clubs back then, and not one incident. But this club, if it can even be called a club, was a country music bar that served excellent food. The only music was usually country from the jukebox and it was never that loud. People drank, but only moderately since cops were nearby. But the girl fights every weekend was just some strange phenomenon there.

Then again... I have run out of a backwoods bar while trying to reach a good compromise between speed and depth of crouch because some idjut decided to let loose with a shotgun somewhere about the other side of the stage... I didn't hang around to find out what it was about...

Clearly, you haven't had, or seen, a Gibby headstock pop off, or neck snap. Those things just don't ever happen with Fenders.

A Fender is twice the weapon any setneck Gibby is for that very reason.

From what I gather he's frequently high on...a lot of things. 40 different people have been through the Brian Jonestown Massacre in 15 years. When your band has a turnover rate that high...it's you.

Great band though, I downloaded a bunch of their albums recently.

I remember one night this guy in his late 70's was grope-dancing with another guy's wife. All were drunk, and one thing led to another, the two men go at it on the dance floor, mostly elbows and shoulders as about a dozen people rushed in to pull them apart. Next thing we know, the whole mess is rolling towards us like a vlow tidal wave of bodies. We braced up against the mic stands to shield the speakers and just waited for the wave to hit.

The good news was, we never lost a beat on the song and no equipment was hurt. The bad news, it absolutely killed the party. People just up and left and it was only about 10:30. They just don't make bar brawls like they used to!

No woman involved...although there were some nice ones there...and I can't do without the lyric sheets...bang on the 'ead 7 years ago started that. Before then I wasn't too bad remembering words but after the bosh for some reason I just can't remember them anymore...and it's got worse as I've got older. Also I change the set week by week...so I don't sing the same songs over and over.

There used to be (might still be) a coach service that went back and forth from Watford to West London shuttling chavs and slappers back and forth from chain pubs to cheesy nightclubs you could feel the house prices drop the moment those things pulled up. They left a wake of vomit, blood, used condoms and unconcious people behind them.

I was in Liverpool this weekend and I was relieved not to see any fights break out. The place was fill of squadies on leave and students on freshers week I thought it would be an explosive mix, but nothing kicked off. I saw one guy literally practicing his shadow boxing as he was getting ready to leave the bar I was in. He looked pretty handy I wouldn't wanted to give that grunt the wrong look that night.
OK...how's about a couple definitions of a few words (for the North Americans)?

Chavs?
Slappers?

You've obviously not seen a female called Jordan in the UK.

First gig with an established band was at a big festival which was traditionally an Afrikaans speaking event in South Africa but had decided to introduce a wider range of SA artists. Just before our spot, Miriam Makeba goes on stage and is subject to quite a bit of abuse and the odd hurled object. The MC then goes on to tell people to chill and is hit in the mouth by an apple. Then it's our turn. Bit of background - the band was the first ever multi racial band in South and formed in the 70's, but this gig took place in 1997. Several thousand people in the crowd and a few of them greeted us with cries of "Communists" and more unrepeatable things but on we went with the show. During a break in the songs this large farmer type walks on to the stage, goes up to the singer and asks for the microphone. Singer thinks that an announcement needs to be made and gives him the microphone. Large man then starts berating the audience in Afrikaans about pedophiles and other unsavioury subjects. At this point a policeman walks on the stage and tries to stop him and is knocked out by a mighty punch. Six security staff then run on the stage and try and get him off - the guys is like a wounded rhino and takes off across the stage with several people clinging to him, and heads straight towards my keyboard rig. Luckily there was only around a five minute delay whilst cables were plugged back in but it was a first gig to remember.

Chavs:Derived from Chatham in Kent, this term can be applied loosely to every culture with a nasty, thieving element.

Slappers:an ugly girl whose main priority in life is to get ****ed!

Squadies:a low ranking soldier in the armed forces,
often seen (paraletic drunk) hanging around kebab houses and childrens parks after dark on fridays and saturday nights looking for a young girl to mate with...

Nope, but if you're gonna do it, do it right. Get a plug, a length of cable, connect the two and leave the other end bare, connect em to the national grid and watch em fry :)

Man, I have seen nights like that too...what I hate is when the idiots that are fighting get too close to my gear...that is when I get in to commando mode and politely give them a nice donkey punch in the back of the head as a warning..:) and for some reason it always works..my gear remains unharmed!

Here in Melbourne lately the government and the police have been banging on about street violence involving the punters from dance clubs and the larger beer barns. I've gotta say, I don't remember the last time I saw a brawl at a live music gig ! Sure, I can understand it happening at the dance clubs, 'coz it's just pilled-up guys and dolls with one thing on their minds - getting laid to a soundtrack of a doof-doof beat. And when they don't score, the frustration boils over.
In my observations, people who are at live gigs are generally there for the music, not the mating ritual.
But that's just my 2 cents worth.

Maybe her breasts were savage enough to break up the fight unaided? But I'd wager they were separate and unrelated comments.

Do a search for Jordan and Page 3.

I'm not proud of it, but I've witnessed stabbings, shootings, fist fights, broken bottles over the head, and nearly every act of violence short of arson and bombing that a human being is capable of instigating, at bars that I've played. I've seen nearly equal amounts of barroom stupidity displayed by women and men. What can I say, some folks can't handle their liquor, and many come from the shallow end of the gene pool. They really should stay at home and watch cartoons.

Probably the most brutal bar room brawl that I've witnessed was at a Fat Tuesday's in College Park, GA that I worked with a funk band in the mid 90's. It started innocently enough. Some guy escorted his date into the room. The guy's date was wearing a tight red dress that would've been too small for a seven year old. She was busting out all over. Some drunk guy decided to grab her on the derriere as she walked by. The young lady's date proceeded to clock the inconsiderate drunk gentleman. The drunk gentleman had several friends in attendance, who proceeded to brutally pummel their buddy's newfound foe. It turned out that everybody knew everybody, and that everybody had an agenda, and before one could say "boo", there was quite literally 300 people beating the living crap out of each other. One woman took a hit to the adam's apple and suffered permanent trachea damage. One man took a knife to the gut. Busted heads, broken bottles, blood galore, it was like a scene out of a Quentin Tarantino flick. At some point, the security personnel tossed in the towel. The situation was simply out of control.

Oddly enough, my band kept playing through the mayhem. Lots of folks tried to jump onstage to avoid the onslaught. Sorry, the stage is my domain. When the chips are down, I'm more concerned about the well being of my gear than I am about the survival of a bunch of maladjusted fruitcakes at a bar. We tossed them off the stage in a fairly perfunctory fashion. For those keeping a score card, yes, I was challenged by one gentleman at one point. I wacked him upside the head with the back of my Fender Stratocaster in no uncertain terms. I'm a pacifist hippy at heart, but above and beyond that, I'd prefer to think that I have somewhat of a say as to my well being, and I prefer to survive. I still have nightmares about that ridiculous gig.

"Blood and Teles" There's got to be a song in the somewhere!

Sorry about your incident. Sounds like you did a heck of a move to save your gear from crashing.

Lots of weird and strangely wired folks out there. Be vigilant!

I remember a good pool stick fight. It was broken up by some buddies, and one of the guys was led outside to cool off.

About an hour later, the guy that left came walking in with a rifle. Fortunately the other guy was already gone.

When he left the second time, we played Already Gone instead of the requested Gimme Three Steps.

A friend saw Chuck Berry play about 25 years ago and told me the show was pretty lame until a fight started in front of the stage. Chuck got close to the action and started to really rock. must of fired him up. makes me wonder how many punch outs a guy like Chuck Berry has seen during his career.

That was an awesome story. I love this forum.

One nice thing about Fender guitars, they are built solid enough to hurt somebody if you have to, in self defense of course.

Can you imagine trying to hit somebody with a Danelectro?
