Gene Clark

Any fans of Gene Clark around here? I got a complilation 'Flying High' a few years ago and was very impressed, great songwriter and a great voice. It seems a shame he didn't acheive greater recognition.

I've got a few of his albums now, solo and collaborations, and I seem to remember word of a DVD (maybe a concert or TV show with Carla Olsen, if I remember correctly) but I can't find out anything about it now.

My memory may be playing tricks, but if anyone else has heard of it I'd be grateful for any info.

Big fan of the man here....

Not familiar w/ a DVD but there's actually some decent footage on the Youtube!

What's your favorite album? (I've only got a few at this point and can't decide just yet. They're all great!)

I've been a fan since I discovered The Byrds and then Gene's solo work back when I was a kid in the 70s. I think "No Other" is an absolute masterpiece...

No, I think you nailed it! I got my first copy as one of my "12 Albums for $1" RCA Record Club selections, and I only ordered it because I recognized Gene's name. It was quite a mindblower when I first listened to it!

I was really disappointed when I finally got a copy of "Two Sides To Every Story" because it was also produced by TJ Kaye and I expected more of the same. I eventually learned to enjoy it on it's own more modest merits...

Gene was much more talented and every bit as tortured a soul as Gram Parsons, but he didn't die young, just kinda faded from view, so he never became a legendary cult figure...

I gotta add that Gene's very first solo album "Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers" is an extremely cool slice of 1967, with some very cool Tele picking by Glen Campbell, Clarence White and Jerry Cole...

One of the great unrecognized song writers and recording artists of the 60's, 70' and
80's. Never in the right place at the right time. Big substance abuse issues. Often self destructive but lord have mercy what a talent. Remember the Byrds reunion record? The best songs on it were Gene Clarke songs the rest of it was bad to so so. John Einarsons's book about Clark, "Mr. Tambourine Man" is a must read for any fan. I have his whole catalog, there are no weak points, none. Died too soon.

I remember having an early Byrds 45 and the B side was "She Don't Care About Time." I still think that's one of the best songs they ever did. I like some of his solo stuff, but liked him best with the Byrds. That is, except for the night I saw the Byds in Dec.'67 where Gene was taking McGuinn's place due to illness. It was Clark, Hillman and Kelly. A good Gene Clark show, but by no means The Byrds. B.B. King and the Electric Flag were also on the bill, so it wasn't a totally wasted night. ;-)

I agree No Other is great record. I also like the one with the Gosdins. My favorite is White Light (with Jesse Ed Davis on guitar). Way under appreciated as an artist and song writer.
