Woodstock the movie [NO political content]
Quote:
Any creative endeavor is certainly open to interpretation and criticism and with so many acts and songs performed over four days there will be many complaints about what was left out. I certainly have mine. However, there are tons of outrageously great musical performances in the film, including: Richie Havens, Santana, The Who, Sly, Ten Years After and many more. If those (and others) are not the type of music you happen to like, that is a different issue. [ Quote:

It's interesting that you should say that. In the film Taking Woodstock (Which I have not seen yet) apparently there are scenes of naked people in and around the pond behind the stage. (As in the original movie.) The director is quoted as saying that he had a very hard time finding appropriate looking extras to fill up that scene. Let's just say that personal grooming is different now than it was forty years ago. Last edited by TDPRI; September 6th, 2009 at 07:26 PM. |

I think when you are considering the Woodstock movie you have to consider that the film makers didn't really know what they were in for going into it. It wasn't a made for TV event like many of the festivals we see now. I don't know what they anticipated, but it probably wasn't how it turned out.
I know when I watch the movie now, I have no interest in any of the crowd and event stuff. When I saw it the first time, I was interested in getting a sense of what it was like, but now when it comes on I've seen all that and I wish I could just see the performances, and more of them. But as the event unfolded, I suspect the people shooting it had to shift gears and make the crowd scenes and all the documentation of that a much larger priority than they anticipated. And once it was all said and done, how could they put together the movie without a big emphasis on all that? The event itself had become a bigger deal than the music in the eyes of the public at the time. And logistically, filming all the performances over that many hours is a huge undertaking, then add to that the other aspects including the storm, and I think the film makers did an amazing job, even if I might prefer it be available in a very different package. I've read of Scorsese talking about making The Last Waltz, which was an event that took place inside, which they had a lot of control over, and some of the stories about how that one came together by the seat of their pants show how difficult it was. Then consider how different Woodstock was from that situation. I recently saw the Monterey movie again too. I think that's a better movie, but that's just my own taste. |

We closed this thread earlier today for a good reason... now you've copied all the quotes from the closed thread and, in essence, reopened the thread.
So, I'm going to do us all a favor and close this one too. I've got plans for my Labor Day Holiday and I don't want to spend any more time watching this thread to see if it's going to go bad just like the last one (that you are quoting from) did. PS. You took all the quotes from that closed thread, but you used all the "jh45gun" links to some other unrelated thread -- that doesn't work. So, I took the time to correct all of those links. |
