changing avatar — again! what's the deal with yours?

i recently changed my avatar pic to a cartoonized version of a promo shot, but i've ditched that because (a) it looked too much like some kind of weird wilderness prophet and (b) it didn't have a Tele in it. so i swapped it out for a recent action pic.

yet some people never change theirs — for instance, getbent has had the same John Stewart photo since he came onboard (for years i thought it was a pic of getbent!). some people don't even use an avatar, while others rotate pics with the seasons, it seems. and ibobunot uses the elegant blank frame with drop shadow! that got me to wondering: what's your feeling about avatars, and why do you use the one you do?

I dunno. Just a picture of me on an average day at work.

Well...I had a Hagstrom logo as my avatar for a while, because my Hagstrom II is the only guitar I play as much (probably more ) than my Telecasters.

But I changed it to a Jack-o-Lantern to remind me that the awful Texas summer won't last forever, Autumn has to come eventually.

I just made one and stuck with it. Makes it easier for me to spot my own posts.

That darn Mark Davis is the man with a thousand faces. One minute he's talking about something, I go refill my coffee, and then he's someone else when I come back.

one of my friends took his car to a car wash in Durant, Oklahoma back in the 80's. Dennis Rodman, a local basketball star at Southeastern Oklahoma State was wiping down his car (summer job) he had a quarter (the coin) in each ear... inside his ears. My friend says, "Dennis, why do you have a quarter in each ear?" Dennis shot the gigantic Rodman smile and said, "because I likes it."

That is how I feel about my avatar. I ain't NEVER changin' it. I'd QUIT before I'd change it.

I fortunately saved your old one Wood, because I loved it... Your new ones are daring and cool... but, I get used to people's avatars (almost like it is them) so when they change it... it is unsettling.

I'm technically challenged, if TDPRI didn't have an Avatar of my Tele it would be blank.

When I joined the forum I used a actioin picture of myself during a 07/08 new years gig.

Not too long ago I switched it over to Don Rich because I like him so much.

The first avatar can still be seen in my sig.

Mine's Frankie. He's sitting on the sofa behind me right now probably up to no good.

In my avatar photo he's only about six months old, chewing on a stick.

I changed it when I left the forum for a while (business problems, stress, bankruptcy) to kinda signify that no one was home.

When I came back it seemed appropriate for where I'm at right now (divorced after 30 years, estranged from my two daughters, new son-in-law & extended family) I have become my avatar....

I went through an intense Clapton phase, and I love that pic of him, so that's why I chose it. Even though I am now out of that phase, and am upset that there is no tele in the picture, I still love it and feel like it may be associated with me here, so I'm not changing it.

mine's just my favorite tele...i wish i could come up with somthing more clever, really, but this just works, i suppose...

there's definitely plenty of folks around here i'd love to ask about, though, for example, like how garytelecastor found that yearbook photo of lerb, and such...

Mine is my dog Ralph... He is Boston Terrier that I got from a dog rescue 16 years ago, he is blind, mostly deaf, and has lost about half of his teeth... and he was neutered before I adopted him.... not much left for him but the daily biscuit treat...

I named my last band after him... Blind Dog Band. The avatar was the band logo.

Sorry about your going through this. If it helps, been there done that.

I feel my avatar is representative of my mental attitude, and approach to life. I like the guy's face.
I work with people with impairments and this picture has been talked about, but it is part of bigger pic of this person and his twin brother. (Out of Australia I believe).
It's the old Nature vs. Nurture bugaboo.

I had an avatar right before this one that was a pic of a guy on the toilet with a cat sitting, (I said sitting) in his pants. The problem was that the avatar was too small and you couldn't see the cat, so it just looked like a guy on the can. Tim asked me to change it, and being a good team player, and TDPRI'er I complied.

Changed mine last month because the old one was a year old, no other reason..

..I too get used to other people's avatars. I'm better at remembering a face (or a picture) than a name. If I met any of you guys in real life and you told me you were a member of the TDPRI and your forum name, I'd ask you what your avatar picture looked like because that's the only way that I would remember you.

I don't think too much about 'em, and I'm too wishy-washy to try and pick one photo to represent me.

But was I the only one wigged out when Tim Armstrong switched his?

I prefer not to change my avatar, except maybe very occasionally (after a year or two perhaps). Reason being, I generally keep track of whose posting based on avatars rather than names. I can recognize an avatar using peripheral vision, so it's very quick and easy. In some cases, I don't even know the person's username, just their avatar.

I've only ever changed my avatar once, on one forum I frequent.

I used to have a picture of Charles Bukowski swigging a beer as my avatar on this and other forums. Then I went to a blues jam and met one of the guys there and when he found out who I was he was shocked: "That avatar makes you look OLD, man!"

So I changed it to a more appropriate pic of me and my Tele, playing a local get together a few years ago. No further plans for changing it.

Mine started out about 10 years ago as a photo of meat work. I put the image in Photoshop and traced the main features of my face.

I then deleted the background so only the drawing was left. I used that as a tiled wall paper on a web page, and everyone started calling it Edhead.

Hence, Edhead was born.

I change mine from time to time just for kicks. My current one is of two Walter's beer bottles from a whole case that someone left at a recycling center in Boulder, Colorado. Walter's is a long-defunct brewery that operated in Pueblo, Colorado. They were owned by Falstaff.

I brew beer for a living. I took this pic of the bottles and thought it kinda looked like a pic that a fisherman might take of a catch. The bottles were my catch of the day, I guess.

I actually used that one because it was a b&w photo that I gave color to.

I appreciate the suggestions getbent, and I've been cooking up a more 'unique' avatar in the time being.
