"It Might Get Loud" . . . just saw it !!!
Wow !!! Loved it. Ok . . . I'm a fan of all three - there's the disclaimer. Basically (imo ) it's a study of 3 generations of guitarist. It looks at all 3 guys individually and weaves their stories together to show the similarities and the differences. But the "Summit", where all 3 are together in the "studio", is where some of the magic moments happen. eg: Jimmy starts playing the riff from Whole Lotta Love:- Edge is straight up off his chair and comes round to see what he's doing with his hands. Jack is just sitting directly in front of him on the edge of his seat (literally) trying hard not to let a huge grin crack his face open. You can palpably feel the moment of, "Oh my God - we are here and Jimmy Page is playing THE riff !!! ". Seriously - I had goosebumps ! Just see it !!!

Yeah, a movie.
There had been a few on here that had been talking a bit about it, that's where I first heard about it. It is playing here as part of the Melbourne Film Festival. If you are a guitar player, go see this movie !

I saw it at its premiere back in September of 2008 at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was amazing. (I was also about 10 feet from Page, The Edge and Jack White as they exited the theatre!)
I came away with a whole new respect for all three, but particularly Page, who maintains a tremendous love and passion for music after so many years in the business, and also for Jack White, who takes a completely different approach to the instrument and to songwriting. What i tell people about this film is that it's not really a documentary about the guitar. (It's made by Davis Guggenheim, whe director who made An Inconvenient Truth.) It's a documentary about creativity and the three subjects of the film just happen to be guitar players. |

I wouldn't even think of Edge as a legend, but that's just me.
I first encountered Jack White in the Rolling Stones concert movie "Shine a light" directed by Martin Scorcesee, released in 2008, recorded and shot at the Beacon, NYC. I could see why the Stones had Christina Aguilera on Stage, but ....

Yes, I have observed their successes from the begining and still I am utterly unimpressed and uneffected by their music. There is a scene in the trailer where Edge stands in front of a tower full with rack mounted effects, doing his thing. Then with one click, he turns everything off and tells us 'blang blang', this is, what the guitar really sounds like. Well, we knew that all along. Now, yes being 50 also means I have my own book of legends and I can assure you, Edge is not in there. If you want I can look again, but ...

I'm not a huge U2 fan either, really, and the Edge isn't up there in my list of fave guitarists. But I think the way to look at his approach is to think of him playing the effects and using his whole kit to put in the sounds that suit the song and the band...which is just a 3 piece instrumentally. He's not hiding behind his effects...he's using them and the guitar is just a part of his 'instrument'. I can respect that, even though I personally prefer a more 'guitar itself' approach.
Judged as a guitarist he's not amazing but I think he does his job. Not many players on any instrument could make those songs work so well with a 3 piece. |

TG puts it in a very graceful and balanced prespective here.
I don't have a problem with musicians being savy with effects. I suppose it's just a personal thing. I am not vested in U2 record stock either. As I said, I am absolutely unaffected by their music. In the best case scenario, I find their tracks nauseating. I apologize to all U2 worshippers.

I saw the trailer for it and first thought.....the Edge???? If it would've been someone like Eric Johnson or Robert Cray or Junior Brown. But...the Edge. I just think it could have been better. I will go see it and will enjoy it though.

It really isn't about the guitarists themselves, per se' .
I believe the point of the film was to look at 3 very different artists, each doing their own thing and getting different results with the linking theme being the electric guitar. I think the "legend" tag was probably just used as a marketing tool. Edge himself says in the film that he loves the effects and uses them as his instrument. He mentions the ad placed on the notice board at his high school seeking a guitarist by Larry Mullen, and wonders what would have happened if he had not answered the ad. He muses that he would probably be working in a bank, or something. I don't think he himself has any pretentions about his playing ability. It's just a different approach to the playing of the guitar, and it has worked out rather well for him, and his band. The movie highlights 3 totally different approaches to the art of playing the guitar. It's not presenting the results of a poll for the greatest guitarists of all time. I say, if you love the guitar go see the movie - then pass judgment.

Thanks for the 'heads~up' Pete, I'll be looking out for it.
I've never heard Jimmy speak before I heard him in the trailer. Didn't realize he has such a "small" voice http://http://www.tdpri.com/forum/bad-dog-cafe/148994-might-get-loud-featuring-edge-page-white.html |

I'll probably see that but I'm really waiting for somebody to make "It Might Get Twangy" staring Redd Volkaert, Junior Brown, and Duane Eddy. Anybody in movie land listening? Anybody?

You don't have to be an edge fan, but he is a logical choice for this picture. The guy has one of the most immediately recognizable guitar sounds of all time. it might not be the one you dig, but it seems to ring true with a HUGE section of the music listening population.

But surely all measures of art in popular culture should agree with my own idiosyncratic preferences?

Even though besides my SparkleDrive I'm not an FX guy I think The Edge sounds incredible and instantly identifiable much like Albert King, Albert Collins, B.B.King, and Carlos Santana. I'd love to see The U2 but I'm very stingy with my money.

I don't see why so many people care who is and isn't in this movie. its a documentary about the guitar and the creative process... whats not to love? the useless hating that goes on on this forum is astounding.

I don't see any hating going on, nor do I see the thread headed for the cra**er.
Different people, different strokes. Some have seen the flick, other didn't. Not yet. To simply discribe the creative evolution of the guitar, one could pick 1001 players who contributed to this evolution during the past 50+ years. We also could take a look at the enormous commercial success of the "Electric Guitar". "businessmen drink my wine" I am sure I will see this movie at one point or another. I hope it's good. If it will lead me to enlightenment ...

I'll probably see it at some point -even though I'm not much of a fan of ANY of those guitar players. But that's just me.
However, I DO think it's a great combination of guitarists for what the movie is attempting to do. If it was me, I probably woulda chosen Eric Clapton, Pete Anderson, and Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead.

There aren't that many "legends" out there. I went back and watched the trailer. That's all I can go by, at this point. They are using "Icons" as a term to describe the landmark position of the players. I was looking up some youtube clips involving Jack White, since I really know as good as nothing about him. What I found, is heavily relying on visuals, as most anything that is produced today throughout the commercial section of the musical arena. U2 obviously came in at the right time, when 'music videos' were starting to sprout all over the landscape, which greatly supported their venture, as their sound is very favorable to the creation of visual support and most of their tracks were probably designed to hit the market together with a video interpretation. Those aspects were not an option when Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love was rioting the air waves.

I really want to see this movie, and I've been looking forward to it since I heard about it coming out. Jimmy Page and Jack White are two of my favorite guitarists...in my top 5 actually. I'm definitely going to see it when I get the chance.
I'm like a lot of people thinking The Edge isn't a good choice, but whatever. Doesn't bother me, it'll be a chance to see how he does his thing compared to other guitarists. I honestly can't name or recognize a single U2 song though, and have no idea what he sounds like. I just know U2 isn't my cup of tea from what I did hear. But no matter who the guitarists are, this movie should be a good look at playing the guitar and the creation process, something we're all interested in, though maybe in different ways... |

I think other choices would appeal to me more, but I understand that the producers weren't interested in making "It Might Go Straight to Video."
So they looked at the music-loving, movie-ticket-buying public and asked themselves three questions: "Who was one of the most popular and influential rock guitarists of the 60's and 70's?" "Of the 80's and 90's?" "Of the 2000's?" |
