Gibson Les Paul jr GAS
I played a LP jr this weekend at a shop in another city, and I was blown away by it. It was just a few bucks over the 800 dollar mark. Sunburst satin finish, great neck, and it sounded amazing. I've been searching for a p-90 guitar for a while now, and this is it. I couldn't buy it this weekend, but it will be mine(or one just like it). Any love for these here in Tele land?

After playing an SG Classic I got the bug for a P90 equipped guitar. The Gibbos were out of my range and the Epis did nothing for me.
I found a Reverend Daredevil 290 in great condition and haven't looked back. Nice and snarly with plenty of single coil character - I finally figured out why everyone raves about P90s. I still dig the double-cut LP Juniors, though... |

The problem is, he's a little guy compared to me. They start looking kinda small on me, but that might be my skewed perspective based on all the time I've spent playing my big ol' Gretsch. I've now got two of the Melody Makers. I still want the Jr. IIRC, the Jr. is the unofficial backup guitar of the TDPRI. Oh, and now I'm remembering the couple of years I spent playing an Epi double-cutaway Jr. as my #1 (when I was skinnier). It was awesome. I played right through it.

I'm in the midst of my 2nd partscaster build right now: filtrtron style pups, mahgoany body, maple car, reverse headstock.
Next build will be an Esquire build: Swamp ash body, Bill Lawrence micro-coil pup, reverse headstock Starting to plan a Jr partscaster build with a mahogany body, P90, and a reverse headstock. Those LP Jr's are way cool, and I cant say I blame you for having GAS for one. You know of course, were gonna wanna see pic's once you get it..........

Yep! I'm just so comfortable now with the Tele shape and bolt on neck, it just fits me to a "T". I just get baetter access to the upper frets with the Tele neck/body combination, than I do with the Lester. And with my playing abilities, I need all the help I can get!

A Les Paul JR is IMHO the best no-frills Rock'n'Roll guitar there is.
Been lusting for a good one myself and I'm at the point where I'm going to sell my all-gold Les Paul with humbuckers for one of those simple and raw beauties.

I have tremendous love for Gibson Les Paul Juniors & Specials, actually.
the Les Paul junior is Gibson's answer to the Esquire, the Special is their answer to the Telecaster. They're just too stupid to realize what they have had for the past 55 years. I have a 1957 Junior, a 59 Junior (favorite), an 83 Junior and a 99 Les Paul special... so far. All with P90s, of course. Second best danged pickup ever invented, after Leo's bridge plate mounted broadcaster pup (of course). Go get one (to start) or a few (you will, eventually) and you'll find they suit the Telecaster player well. :-) Good luck and God bless, Ward

I can't take it. I want to go up there and buy it today. It's only a 6 hour round trip. Maybe I'll just call in "sick" tommorow and go get it. No, I have to wait till after I work some overtime so I can pay cash.

I had one too. I havent been able to say for sure, which guitar has been my all-time favorite, because I have been lucky enough to have a few (A Gibson Custom LP that was just magical, and ES330, again, just magical, my partscaster, and 58 Jr that again, just magical).
But that 59 is solidly in the group of all-time favorites.

The re-issues are out of my price range, but I think this 09 version is just the ticket for me. Besides, the tone is what really made me take notice. Lucky for me I've never played a re-issue, or custom shop guitar. I don't think my wallet could handle it.

Other great LP Jr albums: "Rock And Roll Animal"--Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter tearing it up:

G: Let me ask you a couple of technical questions. What set-ups did you and Steve Hunter use back in the day? D: We were both playing Les Paul Special guitars. Steve's was a TV model, and mine was just a regular Les Paul Special. We played through Marshall stacks, with an MXR phase-90 phaser, and an echoplex. You know, a tape loop echoplex. Real basic. Although, maybe he'd removed the front pickup? I could swear I saw pictures of a one pickup double-cutaway Special along with that top hat: What gear did you use on Rock and Roll Animal? I was using a early-'70s, 100-watt Hiwatt Hundred amps. They had a certain kind of edge to them that was different from a Marshall. I had an Echoplex and the MXR Phase 100. My guitar was a '59 Les Paul TV Special with just a P-90 pickup in the back. I also used a '60 Strat at the end of Rock And Roll.

Although I just looked in the booklet for Rn'RA, and there's a picture of one of them, I think it's Wagner, with a double-cutaway Jr, so maybe he's using the term "TV Special" to mean that.

I believe the Juniors have "special" scrolled on the headstock, just an added Jr. after Les Paul.
They've always been "Les Paul Special" or Les Paul Jr. Special"

I've got one of the '57 Custom Shop Juniors in TV Yellow heading my way thanks to that Musicians Friend phone special going on. Over $1000 off the regular price and they threw in a Melody Maker for free.
