Former NFL QB Steve McNair dead.

Report: McNair found dead
Comment Email Print Share
ESPN.com news services

Career Notes

Steve McNair was drafted third overall by the Houston Oilers in 1995 and last played for the Ravens in 2007. Here's a look at his 13 years in the NFL:
• Honored as three-time Pro Bowler
• Shared league's MVP award with Peyton Manning in 2003
• Led Tennessee to Super Bowl XXXIV in 1999, the only such appearance in franchise history, where the Titans lost to the Rams 23-16
• Joined Fran Tarkenton and Steve Young as the only players to pass for 30,000 yards and rush for 3,500 yards

Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair has been killed, a source has confirmed to ESPN.com.

McNair, 36, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head in downtown Nashville, police spokesperson Don Aaron said. A female victim was also found dead. Aaron said the woman has not been identified, pending notification of next of kin.

The incident happened near 2nd South & Lea Ave in Nashville.

McNair played 13 seasons in the NFL, 11 were with the Titans. He played his final two years with the Baltimore Ravens, retiring after the 2007 season.

"We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair's passing today," Titans owner K.S. "Bud" Aadams Jr. said in a statement. "He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as they deal with his untimely passing."

McNair was picked third overall in the 1995 draft out of Alcorn State by the then Houston Oilers.

I'm in Nashville this weekend and am staying very close to the condo. Mcnair was such a great figure for the Nashville community...I can't believe this happened. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family...

Wow! That's a shocker. I don't ever recall him being involved in any kind of scandal, either.

...Steve McNair RIP...

...apparently part of a double homicide in TN...I'll claim a morbid curiosity, but to be shot dead at 36 is a shame...too many ex-pro athletes get involved in some strange stuff after retirement...you wonder what this was about...

What a tragedy. Like his NFL career, McNair's life ended way too soon.

RIP

He always seemed....

....like one of the good guys. Several ESPN commentators, including former players, were saying he was seriously one of the best athletes ever in the NFL.

Played for Alcorn State and made the big time. Cool story, sorry to see his life end so early and so (seemingly) senselessly.

RIP Steve...

In football they say that playing with heart is one of the intangibles that not every player has. Air McNair had that in buckets full. He was always playing injured and making great plays. May he rest in peace.

...and if Kevin Dyson's arm was two inches longer, McNair would've had a SuperBowl ring to go with all of his other accolades. RIP Steve.

RIP Steve . . .
Another untimely end, far too soon.
It amazes me how many NFL players go before their times in violent circumstances.

This has really sent shockwaves throughout Nashville, needless to say. Even though Steve went to the Ravens in 2006, he still had strong ties to the Metropolitan Nashville/Davidson County area with two charities. In fact, just two weeks ago, he opened a new restaurant here in town on Jefferson Street (Jimi Hendrix's old stomping grounds in the early 1960s, just to add a guitar-based reference). I dare say it would be impossible to find anyone in this town who has an unkind word or thought about Number 9.

Personally, I'm a lifelong, diehard Dolphins fan, but I always enjoyed watching Steve play. I always thought he carried himself with unimpeachable professionalism on the field and uncommon humility off the field.

On a note of coincidence, as I write this post, the local television stations have interrupted programming with a Metro Police press conference regarding the case, and the information coming out sounds, prima facie, like a murder-suicide--even though the police are not officially committing to that description at this moment. Apparently, Steve was shot multiple times, and the young lady he was with (not his wife) had a single gunshot wound to the head with the handgun laying next to her body. Terrible, terrible circumstances.

I'm going to call my younger brother, who's a Metro Police detective (Sex Crimes Unit), to see if his buds in Homicide have any additional info.

God bless Steve's family during this tragic time.

Joel

That was my initial thought, although before seeing those details, I assumed the trigger person-victim would've been reversed. It looks like he was Phil Hartman-ed.

Did you play football at a high level? I don't think "civilians" appreciate the level of violence, and savagery of those who excel at it are capable of. When I made the jump from high school to college it was a trip. I was a great high school player from a not very serious area of the country. Nothing like places like Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Pennsylvania... You know the historic homes of amazing high school ball. Where I was it was more like being in Band. Only I was big fast and strong. And there was a clear line between what us "place holders" who held the team together, started, and did an honorable job doing our best were capable of, and the dudes who just played over their heads. In High School we had one guy like that. In College half the team was that way.

There were just dudes out there who turned off compassion, and empathy completely. They didn't play dirty, they played like if they hit you hard enough you just might turn into a pizza and a pot of gold... And they were going to keep trying until it happened. And if something happened to you, well that's just "how you play the game". And partying with some of these guys was a game of predicting exactly when you had to pull them out of a situation before it went seriously bad. There are no place holders in the pros to watch over these guys. In fact they probably have a "posse" who eggs them on.

Obviously I wasn't going to go any farther, as I wasn't one of those guys, but imagine, the cream of the cream of those guys who make it to the pros... There is a part of them that is capable of stuff you can't imagine. Even quarterbacks. I still think about skinny little Joe Montana when I think of a QB. But most of them are 6'5" 240 these days. And think about how freakin' tough skinny little Joe Montana must have been to survive in the league. We're talking "Rambo would be sitting in the corner weeping" tough.

They aren't like us, and they make their living through violence and intimidation. But once they're off the field there's no ref. And the dude they're intimidating might just be packing heat.

I think its a murder-suicide. Cause McNair was still married to his wife (there is mention of them being separated or divorce processing going). I think what happen is the women Sahel Kazemi was 20 years young stupid and in love probably beg McNair to leave his wife. He McNair probably went over there to break it off and she couldn't take it so she shot and killed McNair 4 Shots (2 in chest and 2 in his head) and then turn the gun on herself.

You wait someone will come out confirm what I said. I would surprise if someone actually shot them. But I believe it was Murder-suicide.

A Nashville paper reported that it was most likely murder-suicide early yesterday.

Your theory about McNair possibly breaking it off with her is certainly a possibility; maybe that's what led to it.

Sometimes you have just a few too many receivers open downfield,...and an extended period of indecision will get you sacked now and then. This one unfortunately brought with it a career ending injury.

A married former (or current) NFL player is found (caught) in a hotel room (apartment) with a woman half his age not his wife.

I am shocked. Shocked, I tell you!

Not.

It looked like a "domestic" from minute one, but I'll admit I was surprised by who was shot more times. Apparently he swept the 19 year old waitress off her feet. In the first year gave her an escalade for her birthday... Very sad all around. Two families lost people in a very public and ugly way.

My post had to do with someone commenting on the sheer number of players dying by violent means, not this case in particular...

If you're gonna think with your "shooter" (as most men do) then you may die by a shooter.

This is fantastic. Ya can't make this stuff up:

"Police Chief Ronal W. Serpas, at a news conference, portrayed Kazemi, 20, as despondent and increasingly tormented by a rush of personal problems culminating with the discovery that the married McNair was also seeing another woman.

In recent days Kazemi had discovered McNair was seeing another woman, police said, once watching her leave the condominium and then following her to her home."

Cheating on his girlfriend!

I wonder what the toxicology reports will have to say about both, because Eddie George mentioned how the Steve McNair since retirement was not the same Steve McNair that was QB...It seems to me that he wasn't in a proper state of mind...I mean who in their right mind puts their name on a car title along with their girlfriend when they are currently married?

Probably the same sort of guy who cheats on the woman he's cheating on his wife with? Dude can't even be faithful to his mistress.
