Which Buchanan album is the ONE to have?

I have had quite a few people saying the first one is. (the one with sweet dreams on it).

But I am not getting the same emotion and technique I see in some of his videos on youtube.

So which one does it for you?

For me his talent is never better demonstarted than on 'Live Stock'.

The one called Roy Buchanans second album for me has the most good songs.

I've only got a 'Best Of' on vinyl, all his albums are extremely hard to come by
down here.

+1. That's a phenomenal record. "American Axe: Live in 1974" is excellent too.

I agree, Roy was usually best live, and the sound of his guitar "Nancy" is at its best here.

This is also true IMO. A great, varied album - his best studio effort.

I'd say these are his best official albums, but I will strongly recommend the two bootleg CD's from his performance at Heinz Hall, Pittsburg 12-16-1972 if you can find them. This is Roy at his absolute best, pants on fire!

PM me for more information on these CD's.

+1. I also recommend the "companion" piece, "American Axe: Live in 1974".

There isn't really just 'one' to have. There's so many good things on lots of his records.

However, if someone told me I could only have one, it'd probably be 'Second Album.'

I agree with Mark, I would vote for Roy Buchanan's Second Album.
Having said that--Roy himself thought his live album recorded in Japan was his best work.
I have it as well as most of his catalog.
I still think Roy's second album if the best.
The first album is great--a lot of the tracks are the standards Roy played in clubs at that time--it jumps around a lot--first the Bluesy tracks and then the Country. Of course the "Messiah Will Come Again" is "to die for."
That was the first track I ever heard played by Roy on the old K-SAN radio station in N California--I was waiting for it to end with pen in hand to take down the information so I could immediately buy it. I still remember it having that impact.
I have a DVD of him playing most of the first album live before he tracked it--it's pretty much note for note as the album.

Most of all, I like the songs on the second album more. It's a more consistent effort--more bluesy--I believe it was basically recorded in just one day too. I read one of his bio's and I remember that "Tribute to Elmore James" was just improvised on the spot--first take! Amazing! I also love the overall recording and mix much better than the first.

If you're a fan of Roy's, you'll collect most of his work anyway--the first or second album are both excellent places to start.

I don't know which one is the "one" to have, but American Axe is one I just can't listen to. I've tried to enjoy it, but his tone is so shrill I can't listen to more than a couple of tracks before I have to turn it off.

The 2nd Album is the one to have. Roy plays amazing licks which seem effortless. His later albums particularly with Alligator got way into the shrill distortion on his tele that they thought was the essence of his sound. My favorite Roy songs are Don't Tell Me No Lies and Good God Have Mercy.

The Roy Buchanan Anthology is excellent, except for the first four songs. You get the best cuts from the first and second album and highlights from several others. If you you have to have a single album, I'd go with the Second Album too. However, Sweet Dreams and The Messiah Will Come Again from the first album are must have cuts too (and you get 'em both on the anthology.)

Well I digged and found the second album at a used cd store in town and it has been in my car all week.

I have always like roy and have a couple of bootlegs was just wanting to find his better studio efforts. Which from what I heard was hit or miss.

I go with the 1st 2 Polydor LPs. There were some good tracks musically on later ones
but kind of sparse overall. That and on some later stuff too much
pyrotechnics (gimmicks) and not as much good music wise.
