Test: What summer did you get "unhip"?

Here's yet another amusing attempt to simplify the unsimplifiable:

I was never really "hip", per say, but I'd say this summer really did it, outside the realm of that article.

I kinda gave up on the whole punk rock scene this year, after realizing what a bunch of hapless tools make up the Detroit area scene.

Grew into some blues rock though. Not all is lost.

Also, I could hum every song on that list but 1988.

I guess around 1986, when I was 36, for me. I know some of the tunes after that, but not many. I was pretty much listening to country by then.

1997, when I was 44. After that, I only recognized the Fergie song.

I guess my disdain for all things Fergie means I became unhip a couple years ago. Either that, or 20 years before I was born.

Actually, I don't think I've ever been "hip." Unless it was in the '80s when it was hip to be square.

forget humming the melody to it, last song on that list that I could say I've heard and liked was "Roll with it" by Steve Winwood. 1988. I was a mere 30 years old.

I've always thought I stopped listening to radio in the '92 election cycle, now looking at the forensic evidence, it might have actually been the '88 election cycle.

I guess it was '89. I agree with Bluesfordan, "Roll with it" was the last one I really liked.

And all this time I thought it was when waitresses started calling me, "sir"

well, according to that test, when i was one year old.

i've always prided myself in never being "hip," but since unhip is the new hip, i'm pretty damn hip. unless of course, the current "hip" unhipness comes from actually trying not to be hip and not the effortless unhipness i exude, in that case, i'm just unhip. dig?

1992 it seems though there are maybe a couple that didnt make it to the UK earlier than that .That would make me 46 when I lost my hipness. Not too bad for an old fart .I can do with all the hips I can get lately

Macarena--hip? Gilbert O'Sullivan? The Year 2525? Close To You?

I could go on and on. I'll just say their idea of hip and mine are not quite the same.

Not saying I don't like the Carpenters. I do, didn't say I was hip!

Well... these are the only songs that were on albums that I paid for and chose
to listen to...

August 1963 - "Fingertips Pt. 2" - Little Stevie Wonder
August 1964 - "A Hard Day's Night" - The Beatles
August 1966 - "Summer in the City" - The Lovin' Spoonful
August 1967 - "Light My Fire" - The Doors
August 1968 - "People Got to Be Free" - The Rascals
August 1978 - "Miss You" - Rolling Stones
August 1983 - "Every Breath You Take" - The Police
August 1988 - "Roll With It" - Steve Winwood
August 1994 - "Stay (I Missed You)" - Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories

Which only proves... I have no life and nothing to do but look at this idiotic poll...

I think "hip" was my (the OP's) word. They bill the test as when you reach "middle age" or something like that....LB.

I was country when country wasn't cool, all 3 or 4 times. I guess Huey Lewis was right, "It's hip to be square!"

I always knew that I was uncool and have been since I was in nappies!

Like many here 1988 seems to be the cut-off point for me - although I do have to admit to a slight liking for Bryan Adams hit in 1991 and could hum the whole thing if I really had to!

1978 I can hear it, but not all of it
1979 I remember the skinny ties and basic rhythm
1980 I have no idea of how it sounds

I was becoming a composer during those years. In fact, writing my first piece in 1978. I guess I found listening to the radio distracting, but I don't remember thinking about it.

If knowing Jay-Z and Usher makes me 'hip', then I'm satisfied being an un-hip dork.

I know exactly what the OP means, this test is one way of zeroing in on when a person quit paying attention to what was on the charts. I thought about it before perusing the list, and it seemed to me that I lost the pop thread in about 1989, and yep, sure enough, that's what I found on this list.

Don't get me wrong, I'm TERMINALLY hip!

Back in 1981 I had to cut my hair for a new job. It was gettin' kinda long, could have said it was in my (boss's) way...shades of CSNY.
Now that I'm the boss I'd grow it down over my shoulders again but that would look pretty bad with the solar panel on top. Still have the beard though.
And that's as close to hip as I've ever been.

If being "HIP" is knowing all the radio friendly, commercial crap that gets pummeled into your head every year then I am very happy to not be hip.

Apparently, I became un-hip in 1988. But I had a brief relapse of hipness in 1994 -- because I really like Lisa Loeb!

Can I get an honorary "hip permit" now, if I like the Weepies, the Shins, Ingrid Michaelson, Imogen Heap, Lenka, Meiko, and the Submarines? Or does that just make me a little pathetic...?

1997 according to the test.

I am no longer cool because I think texting is silly, video games are silly and I refuse to wear baggy pants that let the whole world view my boxer shorts. If you are younger than twenty and reading this.....don't text while driving and pull your dang pants up. You're making me feel like Hank Hill. Come to think of it, I admire Hank Hill.
