I've done it, but they are rough if you want all the cool guitar parts. When the singer in my rockabilly band moved to Japan in 1991, I had to teach myself to sing QUICK, as we still had gigs. I took my Epi Everly Brothers model and busked for 2 weeks straight singing all the rockabilly, Sun records, Carl Perkins, Eddie Cochrane, Elvis, Buddy Holly, etc. that i could think of.

i did that for a while in Toledo after the house band i was in got fired from a longtime gig ... billed myself as the Rockabilly Rebel, wore the leather jacket, slicked back my hair (i had some then) and frailed on an old Jazzmaster. i wasn't trying to "cover" the tunes, just deliver them to the audience in the best way i could.
one night a drummer i knew showed up and it briefly became a duo; then we recruited my old bassman buddy from down south and worked extensively as a trio (Woody & the Wingnuts) for several years. so good things can come from solo rockabilly gigs!

Cool pic! I find the best results are on my acoustic. I strum the main rythmn and utilize the percussiveness of the guitar, with dampening and stops here and there. Then I pick off a few lead notes in between. It relies on vocal expression and a general rebel attitude |
