My fingers. You don't need a pick.

A good friend turned me on to these a couple years back. Haven't dropped, broken or lost a pick since. The 3.0mm is my favorite.

No picks, this eliminates having to bend over and pick it up if you drop it !

I always went with the store-branded freebies, a teardrop, light to medium weight, but I've gravitated to fingers-only now. Took me a lifetime to get used to it .. however, I still use a pick for rhythm playing.
Edit: Years ago, one of my buddies who worked for a major guitar store here, gave me a mic bag filled with a few hundred assorted picks for my birthday. It's funny, but I still preferred those freebies from the music stores ... no matter what I bought from them, I always asked for a couple of free picks. They're nothing special, but I loved 'em. 2nd edit: I used a felt pick at one time when I played a lot of bass. A hard plastic middle, surrounded by felt. It made for a nice soft tone on a bass.

One more argument against picks is that they can give you cancer.
According to 60 a day smoker Eddie Van Halen it was holding a metal pick in his teeth while working in the studio that caused his cancer.

For electric, Fender 351 heavies in either white pearl or confetti, or a similar copy of such. Right now I'm using the Webstrings version, and they're fine but not as good. I'll stick to the Fender Celluloids next time I order. I'm using Fenders when I play out and the Webstrings for practice/rehearsal.
For acoustic, it's either fingers and nails or Martin Medium tortoise. For bass, pizzicata only. |

I am also a huge fan of the Dunlop Jazz III picks (various gauges). I think they help give me the tone I like for blues.
I don't play a lot of chords, but lately I have been trying to do more strumming. Does anyone else find these picks to small for that? I can't help using them 100% of the time. I have a hard time switching picks, because I know when I play chords, I will soon switch back to solos and picking. Jim |

I use medium Stix Pix's by Ice Pix.
I don't stick them to the guitar, but I like the foam on it. easier to grip with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and it kind if sticks to your finger so you can concentrate more on playing than gripping the pick.

I was never really aware how much a pick could change you tone. I started out using any medium pick I could find, then became particular on the thin & medium dunlop picks, then made a switch to the small red jazzIII. For the longest time.. I felt I found the one.
Until I tried V-picks. I'm really lovin' the small pointed and the medium rounded V-picks.

Dunlop H3's for me.
For about 15 years. ![]() Larger tortex feel great are too unwieldily. Jazz III's feel strange to me but are the right size. These are the best of both worlds.

These days I use Dunlop .73 nylon. I used to use the 2mm GatorGrips but went back to something softer.

I use <<<<The Ultimate Jazz III>>> (as spoken by James Earl Jones)
I had Michel Wegen of the ingenious Wegenpicks make up some custom Jazz III for me with his material in 1.4mm thickness and about 1.5mm longer and wider. Pricey, but when I thought about it, these are the most significant positive difference to my gear and tone since finding the telecaster and analog delay. Edit: Most of my guitar friends hate em! But then very few guys like small stiff picks anyhoo.

![]() My fave. I tried the thick Dunlop jazz III picks, but they weren't pointy enough. Started using the Tortex Jazz Sharps 0.88 mm when I had my pointy guitars (Ibanez Rocket Roll and BC Rich Mockingbird neck-thru)

D'Andrea Spectra Sharp 1.5mm - smaller than a Dunlop teardrop style, bigger than a Jazz style pickup, and it has slightly less attack - great for a full, big sound (if I want to get some ultra-twangy sounds, I swith to .96mm Dunlop picks).
Unfortunately, D'Andrea stopped making those, so I bought about 40 to last me for the next couple of years (they last a looong time, too!) |

YES Broken Joe!!! I was looking for the name of my picks... I just love 'em picked a few up at my local guitar store, and just love the grip, thickness and the sharp point of the Dunlop Jazz III... best pick on the market (IMO of course

Now I use Ernie Ball thumbpicks that I shape the end of. I got a bunch that came with a used amp stack that I bought. For flatpick I like Fender medium turned sideways so the bigger round curve is used instead of the thinner pointy end. I like the tone better.

I used to use the regular Fender heavy picks, but only the corners, not the tip. Then I found some similar shaped ones in a local guitar store that had more rounded corners. So I bought a gross of them and I cut off the tip and make it a 3-cornered pick. It takes a little work to cut them and smooth the edges, but I have a lot of free time!
