Concert-festival for Leo's 100th?

Concert-festival for Leo Fender's 100th...

Next month, Aug 19th, would be Leo's 100th birthday. I haven't seen any FMIC hoopla or any threads here about any events/gigs celebrating that.

Is FMIC putting out any 100th sig series Tele?

Are the good citizens of Fullerton having a street parade or overclocked-amp-contest or a weekend festival of all things Leo?

Whats on?

Another doco like the 'Curves Contours and Body Horns' one to celebrate 40 years of the strat would be a good idea.

It could include all the famous amps and guitars and basses that Leo created.

It is an anniversary worthy of some celebration I think.

Come on Fender. Get to it............

+1 to that. Maybe if Fullerton started some hoopla then Corona would have to knuckle up and take the lead or lose the legacy.

Actually . . .

there's all kinds of legal tie-ups with that . . .
Fender M.I.C. doesn't own the rights to Leo's name - G&L does.
DaveO was trying to organize a tribute night here in Melbourne, even spoke to Fender Australia, but was advised that Leo's name could not be used in any advertising for the event.
It all got too difficult in the end... sad, but true.

Fender should pay tribute to Leo even if they don't own his naming rights. He did start the company.

I haven't heard about anything going on around here, but Fullerton seems to like to make it hard to find out about local events. They'll put a little square it the newspaper or something and when you go online it might tell you something is going to happen, but not when or where unless you really dig deep into the site.

Nash, say it isn't so.

What is Fullerton known for already? Do they have an orangefest or marmalade-jelly-nude-wrestling competition or something?

Lets face it ...... though it might mean a big deal to everyone on this site to most folk in the street (who have heard his inventions all their life) his name would actually mean nothing, i suppose in any population the 'guitar nut' part of it is always going to be a pretty small percentage and therefore not important.

Shame though, it would be neat to mark his centenary, we wouldn't be typing here without him.

Sounds like we'll need to mark our calendars and celebrate the great Leo Fender here at TDPRI. Maybe the admin can set up a temporary birthday forum. Spread the word to our friends and colleagues and it will be quite the party!

Thank you Leo!

And very nice they look too.

Hmmmm, and with a production run of only 50 we can ALL join in the celebrations ? !

I know they are wonderfully made and great sounding/playing/feeling instruments but am i the only person who thinks G&L's just look plain awful ?, i'm only talking cosmetics here, i completely understand why folk love 'em but those looks ? ? .....

I like the look and design of the ASAT I think that it takes the principles Leo and George set down in the early 50's and takes them up to the early 80's. They are a post 1970 instrument but a good up date of his classic modernist design.

Hmmmmm, yeah, i like the obvious body shape and the headstock, i think it's the pick/ups and 'bolt on' bits that are a 'no no' for me design wise.

Guess they arent too bothered though

I haven't seen many G&Ls.

Anyway, seeing as its that day again, wasn't it some July 4th parade PA setup job that got Leo going on amps and such?

So "Happy July 4th" while I'm here.

[cue Jimi at Woodstock doing the National Anthem - I wonder what Leo thought of this?]

If Fender does not organize anything, the least we could do is make a special Leo's day on this forum.
A day on which one can only post in tribute to this man.

Yup, lawyers....
I emailed the CEO of Fender Oz after speaking to him on the phone. Then I get a return email... from their law firm....
I fully expect that tomorrow everyone who posted on this thread will have a bunch of the bottom-feeders burst into their houses and snap all their pencils a-la-The Simpsons....

I think a TDPri Special Day in Leo's honor is a wonderful idea!! Too bad there isn't a Fender/G&L/Musicman Festival in Leo's honor tho...just to pay back a little of the debt we all owe a great man and team.

The local museum has a permanent Fender exhibit, but that's the only evidence that Fender started here. The downtown "scene" is huge here, people come from all the surrounding cities to go to the bars in Fullerton. We also have a very busy train station (side note: Axl Rose slept on a bench at the station in the 80s when he came to Fullerton looking for Izzy Stradlin who lived here, Axl didn't succeed however.)

I find it very strange that Fender isn't prided by Fullerton because our city likes to mention historical buildings, our ostrich farm heritage, the orange groves that existed, and the fact that it used to be a major train town. El Camino Real also runs right through the middle and is used as ammo for bragging rights. It may be because it would require licensing and other legal junk, but still it's never mentioned. They give Fender a section of the museum and leave it at that.

I'm actually surprised G&L isn't doing anything because they do a once a year tour of the factory where you go and hang out with other guitar/bass players and get a goodie bag with strings, guitar polish, other little guitar related stuff, and a shirt. They also provide really good food. It's a fun day and Phyllis Fender is there signing autographs and having a good time. Maybe they'll just make mention of his 100th at this year's tour.

Good idea!

And if we just say LEO, not LEO FENDER, the sewers will stay away?

What a sucky world.

Can I say Henry FORD without a ton of bottom feeding sewers showing up?

Yeah, me did a typo -9 is next to 0.

I like the NY Times Obituary bits:

quote:

Clarence Leo Fender Dies at 82; His Guitar Changed Rock Music

Published: March 23, 1991

"....Early models of Fender guitars sold for $75 and Mr. Fender, a country music enthusiast, gave some of his guitars to country music players. Today an early original can sell for up to $20,000.

"CBS bought the Fender business in 1965 for $13 million, and sold it in 1985 for $12.5 million after cheaply produced overseas guitars had destroyed the market for American-made products."

:)
... 18 years later...
