I'm so proud that I could burst (come hear my band's twang)
My band has finally finished our record! Well, we've still got mastering but once that's done we'll be good to go.
I guess I'll start at the beginning. l to r: Colin, Kirk, Jacob, Chris (me), Andrew (yeah we're kind of weird) We're called Yardsale and we're probably the 4th or 5th variation of the band to have that name. We mostly play roots rock and alt-country types of things. One guy described as Gram Parsons fronting the Heartbreakers and I would say that is a fairly accurate description. We're all in our early-mid 20s and most of the records in our collections are older than we are. The only constant has been Kirk our bass player and one of two of the primary songwriters. The band was founded by Jacob (rhythm guitar) and Kirk as an outlet for some of the songs they had been working on. Jacob quit for a while and I was taken on as his replacement's replacement. After the lead guitar/pedal steel player quit I took over lead guitar duties. Once Colin (drums) and Andrew (keys) joined the band we finally coalesced into something resembling a real rock n' roll band. We've been writing and rehearsing for over a year and finally went into the studio way back at the beginning of March. We took two days at Downtown Recording in Louisville (great studio) and did most of the backing tracks. There was a lot of drama to follow. The guy that was engineering our album decided was completely unreliable. We were going to do vocal fixes and overdubs over at his place but he would disappear for days at a time and we would be unable to contact him. He would break appointments and then when we tried to get our tracks from him so that we could go elsewhere he gave us the runaround. Finally we got our tracks and were able to finish up with a friend of ours. I'm very proud of our work here. This truly was a collaborative effort on all of our parts to make this as good as we possibly could. Almost all of the backing tracks were recorded live in studio. The only fixes and overdubs are usually vocals and things like the pedal steel or organ. Anyhoo here's a handful of tracks to give you an idea of what we sound like. Keep in mind these are not mastered yet: This is our attempt at a classy album coverClick here to listen to Yardsale - Album 4 Final Mixes - 07 - Fencepost.mp3 - This one features Neil Hulsewede on pedal steel guitar and the ever-amazing Sandpaper Dolls on backing vocals Click here to listen to Yardsale - Album 4 Final Mixes - 05 - The Bullet That You Dodge.mp3 Featuring the Huckleberry Horns and Sandpaper Dolls Click here to listen to Yardsale - Album 4 Final Mixes - 11 - Dream of Amarillo.mp3This song is a tribute to Ms. Emmylou Harris w/ Neil on pedal steel Hope you like it and let me know what you guys think. Mods if this is in the wrong place then mea culpa and move it as you see fit. |

Nice job!
I *love* the album cover! I envy you that you live in a part of the country where a band like that can thrive. I live in upstate NY and there's no music scene to speak of. Cover bands (of which I am a guilty member of) and metal. A band like yours, I'm sorry to say, wouldn't make it far around here. I can think of maybe one or two venues in a fifty mile radius that would have a band like that. Keep up the good work!

I'm glad you guys like the album cover so much. That's actually a public domain photo we found in the Library of Congress photo archive. It's Houston, TX circa 1940 or so. It kinda reminded of the cover of Taj Majal's first album. |

![]() On the left is my partscaster which is my #1. Everything else was my Tele. Ash body with a Seymour Duncan Broadcaster in the bridge and at the time a Bigsby and GFS Dream 90 in the neck. Now it's a Micawber ripoff ![]() I used the Gibson ES-197 and Xaviere XV-900 on one song. Jacob used a G&L ASAT Classic with Fender Noiseless pickups. He plays the first solo on Bullet so you get a good idea of how the axe sounds. Amps were Fender Hot Rod Deluxes running a couple tube screamers out front. I also used a Dan-Echo and Vox Distortion Booster on a few songs. Once the album comes out I'll post an update in this thread and PM anyone who expressed interest. Thanks again for all of your kind words. There are some monster players on this board so your support means a lot to me. I'll post a few shots from the studio that I took a little later on today (I'm a photo nerd too.) Quote:
Check out Neil Hulsewede who played pedal steel for us. His solo stuff is amazing Neil's Myspace |

I like your lead playing Chris, nice chops.
I'd love to be in a band such as yours but as Ignatius says, I'm stuck in a covers band, and I can't stretch my time/energy into any more. I hope you guys find success. Your sound kinda reminds me a little of the David Crowder Band, I love that 'Americana' sound. |

Please pm me when the cd's finished and ready to purchase.

/QUOTE] And THAT is the ultimate compliment! The album cover alone will sell a million. Best of luck! Let us know when they're available for sale. |

Just a quick update for those that are interested. We've got a label interested in us now that is fairly well known in our area. He just wants to see us live before he extends an offer but from what I hear he digs us quite a bit. Hopefully I'll have some more news to report back in the next few weeks. His label distributes through Sony Music. I'm not going to get my hopes up but this sounds like something might come of it. If we sell enough to make our money back from recording and we can get the record out on vinyl I'll be happy.
We also added four new songs to our myspace (click here!) from the album. And last but not least we played a few days last week one of which was at the local ballpark for the whole Budweiser Dollar Beer night thing and we took some pics. We also made fun of Budweiser, a local weatherman who is an institution around here and the Fox Morning Show all while on mic. I don't think anybody minded though. I'll post photos from that show shortly. |
