Got a fort?

I MEANT to say fort! How many of you married guys have a little workshop, hideout, storage building, whatever, where the wife doesn't come to? I don't mean off limits, just that she stays out for the most part? My divorce becomes final as soon as we get a court date, still friends, but I believe if I'd had a little getaway, where I could work on stuff, play guitar, watch gross stuff on cable---we might have made it. So how many of you guys got a little fort of your own?

I'm not married (by the legal sense), but I'm living the married life with my girlfriend.. we just have a one bedroom apt in LA, I'd kill for a man cave.

Office (computer, stereo, guitars), Shop (tools, stereo, guitars) and Studio (computers, stereo, guitars).

I'm not into tv that much as you can see. There is a tv in the office but it hasn't been on since "the switch" as it's not digital.

I have a two car garage that is seperate from the house garage. It's sits back on our property. The prior owner of our home kept a smaller Lake Michigan boat out there.

It's the man shed. Tools, tractor, my bass boat, weed wackers etc. I have a huge honking boom box (10 bucks at a garge sale....yes!) hanging on a wall. I rock and roll and work with tools out there.

Lots of rural guys in WI will have small pole buildings on wooded lots. Lots of man storage. I have the extra garage.

I guess I have multiple man caves.

First, I have my home office, which has my computer with a built-in Blu-ray player/burner and 5.1 surround, which is hooked up to a PreSonus Firebox, a POD X3, monitors, etc. The room also contains a Roland electronic drum kit, congas, a TV w/DVR, a lot of my guitars, all of my DVDs and some of my CDs.

In my garage, I have a small "stage" with a keyboard, a kid's drum kit with roto toms, a bass, acoustic and electric guitars, timbales and a POD XT Live, along with an old big screen TV with a 5.1 surround system. There's a monitor and a keyboard that are hooked up to a second recording station in a drum isolation room (which has a 5-piece drum set w/roto toms and, of course, its own monitor and keyboard) where I also record vocals. The computer has line outs to the P.A. (so I can play along to stuff I've recorded) and the big screen (so I can play downloaded videos, etc.).

Yup, had a man cave, a good one too BUT ....... decided to flatten it and give her more garden space when we had the house remodeled and now i have a studio (in the house) to fiddle in but no man cave and you know what ?, we get on a lot better without one !!!!

It forces you to share and talk to your partner and i know sometmes it's hard to pretend you are interested in shoes and kittens but for us it worked, i reckon it's more 'Man' to do that than run away.

A DEFINITE YMMV on this one i think.

The Mrs. and I have finally gotten a house big enough for us and our stuff---it is a real blessing!
My mancave is 24x15,and it serves as my studio/rehearsal space/repair room,and.....well,the TV says it all.
These were taken right after we moved in,not everythingwas set up yet.

I have a tiny cellar, down 8 treacherous steps, just big enough to stand up in and turn around (if you keep your arms down). I built a really nice cabinet for my old 15" JBL 130, but stupid me!... it wouldn't fit up the steps....

One of these days, I want a compound with a lair and some hidden rooms, but I might add a fort to my list.

I ddefinitely have my manhole with my little lady. Its just the spare room in our two bedroom apartment. But it will due for now. Got all my junk, roll around tool box, workbench and pegboard, soldering station couple 4x12 cabinets, tons of mics and cables. Closet with shelves added to store all my random objects. Computer and a sewer cover hanging on the door.

She still invades it to check her facebook and bank account...

My wife and I immediately knew this house was it. We've been in this 1926 Craftsman-style house for 10 years now. For her space, she has a sun room with windows on three sides. When the door is close, it means closed. I have the half attic upstairs. It is carpeted, paneled, and has a half bath. Oh, and built-in drawers. The only problem was the heat. Foolishly, I thought a window unit air conditioner would work. Nope, not a bit. Then I got a grant to write a composition. I used it to buy a built-in air conditioner for the attic. As the installer said, we can freeze you out up there. The only problem is that sometimes my toes get cold.

I have a portable man-cave.

BS you say?

I come in here in my room and I turn on the TV low, fire up the cornfuser here, and grab my partscaster. Wife comes in, I fart. She leaves. I do that wherever I want to man-cave at. Works like a charm.

I have no fort

I have a guitar room, but she decides when I've had too much time alone...

I can't even hide in the toilet...she comes & talks to me on the can...

Hell, she even watches me in the shower....

it's hard being me....

I have an upstairs spare bedroom converted over to a recording studio.
She has a downstairs bedroom converted over to a quilting room.

A place to hide away from each other is important for sure. The fact that we both have hobbies really helps us get along better.

I've lived 20 years + in the Duplex my grandfather built back in the early 50's...
...bought it back around 2000 from older brother and sister's inheritance... Then Girlfriend moved in... Batchelor pad got started into bad junk out phase...

I still have the office, but it's cramped and no A/C!

I had the Studio, but it's junked up and awaiting another transition/metamorphosis...

I had a makeshift woodshop in one sidda' the barn which got junked outta' service but me and a buddy are rebuilding it right now. (termite damage) It was turned into a two car garage many years ago. I'm reclaiming it into one space. Insulate; dry in, make a real shop and 'sgonna be better than ever!

Then comes... studio transition and an electronics shop in the house... The electronics shop is gonna' be structured for multi-use... My own and the GF's crafts... somewhere in this mess, I gotta re-wire this house! ...and re-model the kitchen... A real HVAC system to replace the non-functional one I have now would be nice... Geez... My poor house is older and more decrepit than I am!

I am single and have my own house..the whole thing is my Mancave. clothes on the floor in the bedroom, beds not made. A whole studio room just for the guitars and computer, etc. a living room with big leather chairs and a good TV,DVD surround setup. The only thing I miss is a garage with a hotrod or 4x4.

Not really; there is a music room, but we share it..A friend of mine has a house near work (it's a hour commute each way & I often need to stay late) & is looking to rent out the dormer apartment for cheep. I'm seriously thinking about having "a place in the city"...

my fort is called the Woodshed ... it's a little 8x15 former workshop converted into a studio/office. it's separate from the house, so my noisy habits don't disrupt the household and i can escape for as many hours a day as my wife will tolerate. since all my gear and computers are out here, that's less "clutter" (her words) in the house, and when my buddies come out to jam/rehearse, it doesn't impact her life at all. my creativity and productivity have increased greatly, and she likes having me out of her hair!

As a guy that was married for 9 years and got divorced and then remarried and has remained happily married for 25 years -- I doubt the original premise -- that if you had a "fort" of your own that you wouldn't have gotten divorced.

Everybody's different. But I'm just saying.

I've got what I call my "Man Room". I love it. Its just got my guitars in there, but its my little escape when I need it. Even though my wife pretty much has the rest of the house, I wish she had one. Any time I need to unwind, I just go in there and play my guitars. Sometimes, I'll just go in there and sit and occasionally, the dogs will join me. Right now, its not decorated, and only has one chair, but I'd really like to get it going. I think its a must.

I totally agree, Paul. A "fort" can turn into a place where you can just avoid marital issues. They'll still be there when you come out. That's not to say that a personal space is not a good idea. I just don't think it prevents problems.
We have "zones" in our home. We have a quiet zone for reading or listening to music. We have a theatre zone and a computer/office zone. We have a music zone. Both of us use our zones, either by ourselves or together. The computer zone is fun together because we have two computers and we play network games. However, we don't mind when either of us just wants to disappear to one of the zones for some "me" time. We know that it's not personal if we need to get away from each other for a time.

Mistermullens, I'm thinking you should go tiki. Get some bamboo furniture, fake palm trees and a big ol' tiki head. That'd be the coolest fort ever.
