Tubes are hear to stay barring any crippiling environmental regulation (ala mercury batteries).
I think a better question is when will 35mm film go the way of tubes records & other film products..
Tubes, records & various other film sizes/types are still available but require purchase from a specialist shop or mail order from same. 35mm print film is still easily purchased from numerous mass market outlets. As the number of folks still using their point and shoots dwindles to nothingness, this will change & 35mm film will become a " serious hobby/artist" product being served by specialists..

Didn't Carlos Santana use some sort of SS amp at Woodstock? I seem to recall hearing that somewhere. Can anybody confirm or deny that, and if it is true...anybody know what it was?

It was an early/prototype Galien Kruger amp, and it was solid state.

According to http://www.gallien-krueger.com/info_innovations.html:

Quote:
1969: The GMT 226A, most powerful amp of its day, goes to Woodstock with Santana.

I just had my Showman rebuilt. when I called the repair guy he told me," I rebuilt this in 1978". it had been so long ago I had forgotten. hard to believe that a tube built for Hi-Fidelity contributed so much to the sound of Rock and Roll. Long live the 6L6 and all its wonderful variants.

I went to an open mic last night. At this open mic, you can use the House guitarist's amp (in this case a Dr Z Maz 18 I think) or bring your own. There were TWO people with Cyber-Twins and I almost threw up. What was funny was one of the guys with a CT came over after I played and asked me what amp I had (it was my Clay-Hullett Deluxe). He now wants to get RID of his Cyber-twin and get a Hullett Deluxe.

I experienced a certain amount of elation over that.

I heard once that now (2009) is the golden age of tube amps, I think that tubes will be around for a while, you and I will probably keep buying them because there just is not a substitute (yet). Remeber that first E chord turned up with a smidge of tube distortion? I always will...

If they can make it sound like my DC-3, I'm down.
