UK mobile phone directory
The Directory of Mobile Phone Numbers goes 'live' shortly so if you are an old geezer like me who does NOT want to spend his life fighting off junk calls you can become 'mobile ex-directory' by removing yourself from the list, you have to hqave your mobile on 'cos they will text you a code that you reply to.
The link is right here.

thanks for that, have just added to ex-dir...although at a quid a number, not sure how many people will be that desperate to get in touch...they don't even give out your number, they text you that someone wants to get in touch...
Great idea - they'll make a fortune no doubt. Thanks again Big John |

I'm not sure if this will be any use for "marketing" calls, as its far too expensive at a pound a pop, and, if I've understood the explanation on the site properly, you would then have to call the marketeer back, which is not very likely. I'll wait to see what happens before I go ex directory.

You think that will stop telemarketing? You're kidding yourselves.
Telemarketers just ring numbers in sequence. Starting with each exchange in each district and sequentially going through each possible number. Sometimes they use real estate directories. But come on, you know your mobile number... I'll bet you could ring up another 10,000 people from that info alone. It's like a salesman going door-to-door. Sure, you can take your address out of the public directory or real estate guide or phonebook, but that doesn't change the reality of your house still being there. The Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons or other religious group will still find you. LOL Removing your number from this directory is akin to gun control laws: It won't affect the criminals or those infringing on your privacy. Think about it. Ward

Actually, I have a feeling this service might be doomed to failure. You pay a pound, and all that happens is the guy you want to contact is sent a text saying, "contact this person". The recipient of that text is quite likely not to bother, whether you're flogging him life insurance, or you're his long lost brother, or offering him a spot on the Royal Variety Show. And its still cost you a quid!

Thanks for the heads-up John, it amazes me that these junk-callers persist...they must know how irritating they are, I wouldn't buy something on principle, if I'd been harrassed to do so and sure I'm not the only one that feels that way.
Bloody parasites!

Wel, it doesn't seem the best business model agreed but whatever, my number is off it.
Sandra my partner also took our house number off at tps (and yes, we are ex-dir) when we moved and hey !!, no sales calls !!, if anyone rings now it's someone we know and not me winning a holiday somewhere. When things are quiet i do kinda miss arguing with double glazing sellers though ............. When they called i often told them "Sorry we aren't on the phone" or "I'm a student" was usually a good one.

We get quite a few sales call here at the office, - my usual response is to try to sell them whatever they are selling me. This confuses the hell out of them.
Caller: "Can I speak to the stationery buyer?" Me: "You got him, now what do you need? We got a special going on self stick envelopes, - except they don't stick very well, ... so we'll bung in a couple of free glue sticks with every order, - what do you think?............" Caller: "..Er ..no I don't need any envelopes, I was calling to.........." Me: "Look, do you need any stationery or don't you? I've got a good line on carbon paper if you want some, - unfortunately its orange, but it seem to work fine........." They've usually hung up by now. Rick J

I wasn't in the directory. Probably because my company provides me my phone.
Cold caller: Hello is that <name>? I'd like to inform you on a special offer we have, etc. etc. Cold callee: Actually, I'm a bit busy now, can you leave me your number and I'll call you back? Cold caller: Err, we don't give out our number. Cold callee: No no, you don't understand: give me your personal mobile phone number and I'll call you this evening when you're relaxing on your sofa watching the telly and see how you f**king like it! *Click*

Hmmm... Since I 'opted out' I've started getting SMS messages from a company asking if I had an accident at work and would I like to claim compensation?
It happened the day of the opting out and is starting to get in my nerves. Just a heads up.
