Fav. country artists that get no play...

I'm trying to get a good list of modern country (bands/artists) that really don't get any radio play. Ones that stick to country music's roots and sing about heartache, drinking, and such. I have found some, but it seems like finding a needle in a haystack...

Here are my tops:

Dale Watson
Derailers
Dwight Yoakam (I guess he gets some play)
Shooter Jennings

Fred Eagelsmith
Dave Alvin
Robert Earl Keen Jr
The Bottle Rockets
James McMurty
Steve Earle\
Hank Williams III
etc. etc. and so on.

I realize that some of these may be considered more alt-country/americana/roots, buts its all country to me. Can't stand what passes for country on the radio these days.

A good way to get turned on to similar music to what you like is to listen to web-radio such as pandoras box or last.fm, put in an artist you like and they will play a selection of that artist and similar music. Also, check out Boot Liquor Radio online, and take note of who is playing the stuff you like.

Good luck, lots of great music out there these days.

I've got some favorites...

BR549
Junior Brown
Heybale!
Andy's Automatics
Moot Davis
Joel Paterson & The Western Elstons
Justin Townes Earle
Wayne Hancock
Mark Chesnutt
The Waco Brothers (Jon Langford)
The Hoyle Brothers
The Dixons
David Serby (Taras Prodaniuk is in that guy's band)

For that matter, why don't these guys get on the radio more...
Buddy Miller & Lyle Lovett

WHAT?! Had to edit my post after I saw you're from Chicago. You probably know a bunch of the people I posted already. The Hoyles do the Friday night Honky Tonk Happy Hour at The Empty Bottle every week. Miss Chicago! Left there 5 years ago and still have a lot of days when I wish I hadn't.

I was just going to reply to this... I didn't think anyone outside of Chicago knew about these guys! I've seen them quite a few times here. Great, great stuff!

It's a shame, isn't it?! Because they're also missing out on the great... GREAT... work of the Pine Valley Cosmonauts, Kelly Hogan, Scott Ligon, Sally Timms and the whole lot of them. Chicago's a great country city dating way back to the Hillbilly Heaven era of the city's Northside.

Someone ought to write a country song about this year's Cubs. It'd be sad enough!

Dixons out of NYC.

But I do love Blue Rodeo and The Sadies. In fact, I hear Jim Cuddy makes a guest shot on my buddy's new record! www.joearmstrong.com (should be out soon)

What if Randy would have gotten through that game with no walks and no hits. Perfect game or no hitter with a *. Do I hear Academy Award nomination here? Totally sucked for him. I think the Cubs miss Woody and Mark Derosa big time.

Yea, his record does not reflect how good he's pitched this year... I feel for the guy. I agree with you too, I'm not sold on Gregg as a closer at all. All the injuries are really showing how big a role De-Ro had with the Cubs too.

They oughtn't have messed with a good thing. Kept Woody and DeRosa and maybe did a little signing... Abreu would've beena good fit and just old enough to be gone by the time Hoff and Fox are really ready to go every day. That's my take anyway. Jake Peavy woulda been nice.

Milton Bradley? I'm not a fan.

By the way...the poster who posted James Intveld... NICE ONE!

I like some of the younger artists that are carrying on the Texas honky tonk tradition:
Justin Travenio
Becky Hobbes
Amber Digby
Bobby Flores
Dale Watson
and there are others.

You may hear them on XM/Sirrus but not on mainstream radio.

Cross Canadian Ragweed
Reckless Kelly
Charlie Robison
Eli Young Band
Wade Bowen
Randy Rogers Band
Ryan Adams
Micky and The Motorcars
....there is so much more that isn't played because there not from the"Nashville Machine"
They write there own song's and play with there own band.
Nashville is so stuck in the "studio cats"and "road dogs" way of doing things.
Performing artist Rarely write there own songs.
There are acceptions to this rule. Paisley,Urban,Gill,Wariner all get to play and write on there albums. Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift have broken the barrier for the females, writing there own material. Then again there are artists out there who can't write for the life of themselves yet can sing. I think the Producers and Labels need to do a better job of alowing the talent to blossom both ways.

Jimmie is an old friend of mine and a great performer.
I guess we could then add Joe Ely, Butch Hancock and
The Flatlanders.. A ton of Austin music.

Yep why not add Joe Ely, The Clash felt he was good enough to add as their opening act when they toured America.

Anybody ever hear of Ray Scott?

If not for Ray I probably would not have bought a Telecaster.

I wish he was with his normal band in this video, they're a funny bunch.

There's his normal bunch.

Ray gets less airplay than I do!!!

In addition to the aforementioned Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Derailers, Yoakam, Kevin Welch, Mark Collie, Buddy Miller....all of whom I heartily agree with...let me add:

David Ball
Bob Woodruff
Martin Delray
Marty Brown

Country radio never played them in their heyday (or at least when they had record deals, which may be why they don't have deals anymore)...

And let me also add the wonderful Patty Loveless and Pam Tillis....two amazing singers who are still putting stuff out there but get hardly any recognition at all anymore, and certainly no airplay.
