"Dave, why do you love P-90's so much?"
Well, this might be one reason -

Hello Hello djdeacon--
Yeah, Zal is great. P-90 pickups are my fave. S.A.H.B. used Hiwatts for alot of outdoor / larger gigs but my fave combo is a P-90 through an old Marshall. I've had footage of a show S.A.H.B. did at The Marquee in 1972 and Zal's tone is even better [he's using a Marshall] . Nice topic for a Tele forum, eh?? Brian. |

Brian, I think Zal's just one of those guys who's underappreciated these days. Add him to the list that includes Paul Kossoff and MIck Ralphs.

I saw The Sensational Party Boys (The SAHB but with Dan McCafferty from Nazareth on vocals) some years ago. They were (ahem) sensational!
IIRC, Zal was playing a Musicman Sabre. Can't remember what amp he was using though.

Yeah, it seems like I'm never more than a few songs away from a track off "Live at Leeds" when I'm listening to my iPod.
You guys know the story about Mose Allison and "Young Man Blues", right? When the Who put that Allison track on Live at Leeds, it suddenly pushed his income thru the roof. In fact, when he got his first royalty cheque (it was about four thousand bucks, as I recall), he ran to the bank to cash it, assuming that his publishers had made some kind of mistake!

I love the way he just stared an obviously "not really into it" crowd into submission... Alex Harvey was a big influence on Bon Scott, AC/DC's hooligan frontman from their Aussie years...RIP :( The first time I saw Zal Cleminson, I thought "Who is that clown playing the guitar..." Seriously good player. When you look at it there's an obvious SAHB influence in the early AC/DC- streetfighter frontman, and kick@ss guitarist in a ridiculous outfit

oh I don't know, i don't want to blow up this love-fest, but didn't anyone notice that the guitar player was wearing silly clown makeup and some kinda weird clown suit? And he played a lot of 70's diddly-diddly stuff, but nothing very memorable? I have heard much praise for the SAHB, but every time I listen to a record or watch a film like this, I wonder what's it all about?

SAHB had a very distinctive voice - I can't think of another rock act that could pull off "Next" or "Man in the Jar". However, I think the fact that they were that unique may have ultimately limited their appeal - they never really did any business on this side of the Atlantic, despite coming over to tour.
