Even though Jim Reeves had a pleasant singing voice, his style of country & western was not my cup of tea. To be honest, I didn't learn to like country music until the early 70's, and Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash were among the first ones I liked.

Ry Cooder, on the other hand, was a firm favorite from his first album release.

Guess what version I like best?

vs ?
both great !
#1: i'm ten years old playing shuffleboard and watching midwestern hay-ride in the dive bar up the street, while my dad is drinking beer with his pals after supper.
#2: sitting with my first electric guitar ( 73' hard-tale strat ) trying to figure out how the hell he's doing that .
both great .....

Ry Cooder is not a gifted singer.

To complicate this thread check out YouTube for Frankie Miller singing this song. (Sorry I've no idea how to add the vid to this post!!)

Another great version proving that a good song can be done in a multitude of ways and still be a good song.

Time to fire up the turntable & dig out the Frankie vinyl.

I'd never sit down to listen to a Jim Reeves album, but there's times where his voice
meets the right song and this is one of them.

Gotta give this one to Jim Reeves. My parents were Reeves fans so I heard plenty of him growing up. He's one of the great voices of all time.

Ry Cooder is not. As Hank Snow once said to Chet Atkins, "Better stick to the playin', Chet."

totally agree...some things are just better left "unchanged" IMO...i'm all in favor of putting a different spin on songs and trying different arrangements as i said in the "things that suck" thread....but not that particular song...other Jim Reeves songs, yeah, i've heard versions by other people that i thought were better than his versions....as i've said many times, if we all liked the same thing musically there would only be one artist making the music, and only one guitar being manufactured...
