Traditonal country artists you like

Thought I'd start this thread for those individuals in a couple of threads last week, running down new country. Now I really like a lot of the new country but there is no denying that some of the traditional artists that carry on the tradition today have some great music to offer. So who's your favorite traditional country artists that are current say from about the last 10 years till current.

Mine:
Deirks Bently (I think this one might barely be considered traditional)
Brad Paisley
Daryl Singletary

Dwight Yoakam
Hank III (okay, he's on the wild side of country, but it's traditional style playing)
Junior Brown

Gee, uh George Jones, Willy Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon, Marty Stuart, Patsy Cline. Allison Krauss, Emmy Lou, Buddy Miller. How long can this list get? You did say traditional didn't you?

Thats how I feel about Daryl Singletary. He had a couple of hits on the radio but doesn't get much recognition. He's kind of a mix of Keith Whitley and Conway.

but i think the OP meant artists from the last 10 years or so if i understood his post....as far as current artists, there are none that make me sit up and take notice...not saying at all it's not good cause it IS good, it just ain't for me....i never turn the radio on or watch the country music award shows any more, haven't bought a CD/DVD in forEVER, last one was DVD of Haggard at Billy Bobs....

will have to say there is ONE group out there doing the kinda traditional country stuff i really like...The Time Jumpers...great, tight band and all of them are masters at what they are doing and you can tell they enjoy what they are doing..before his death, John Hughey on pedal steel was a joy to listen to and watch on their live DVD...wish i could find a copy of that DVD somewhere..

i don't want to start a war, but I would not consider Deirks Bently (I think this one might barely be considered traditional), Brad Paisley, Daryl Singletary to be Traditional Country, but that is just me.
Dale Watson
Wayne Hancock
Dwight Yoakam
The Derailers
Hank III
J. B Beverly
Joey Allcorn
Junior Brown
Moot Davis

Then you have all the guys that ARE traditional that are still doing it
George Jones

Dwight Yoakum, and Junior Brown, and Marty Stuart, and Tom T. Hall.
I think Tom T. Hall is one of the greatest songwriters in all History period.

I kind of noticed that he meant younger traditionalists as the replies came in but I'm staying with my list. One thing though, I did get a kick out of Marty Stuart's "Kindred Spirits" CD some years back. Now I realize that not all the performers were country artists but Travis Tritt's version of "I Walk The Line" still sends shivers down my spine. I have some Dwight Yoakum too but its sort of an acquired taste. Some I like some I don't. Like most things I guess.

Wow. You don't consider Daryl Singletary traditional. Then with all due respect I'm left with the conclusion that you don't know what traditional is. I can see debate of Deirks and very little debate over paisley but it doesn't get anymore traditional than Daryl. "I never go around Mirrors" ala almost dead on to the Keith Whitley version complete with impression of Keiths vocal sound. The Conway/Loretta duet that he did with Rhonda Vincent, "After the fire is gone". And many more. And this is probably the secret as to why traditional country is rarely found on radio. Because its been done to death. People want different. But that's ok because I have all my old faves, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, etc on CD as well as some of the more current traditional artists.
Just a bit of defense for Paisley being traditional. I never thought he was very traditional either listening to the crappy stuff of his they put on the radio. But when I started buying his CD's I found he is very traditional. Lots of old style country and an old time gospel on each CD. I find Brads CD's are traditional country with a couple of commercial songs thrown on. With the exception of "Play". I guess Brad straddles both sides of the fence by writing a song or 2 for radio to make some money and then the rest is pretty much pickn grinin and old time country.
I''l give ya Deirks although just about anyone with a deep country voice like that almost passes as traditional with me.

Plus one on The Derailers. I like Dwight Yoakam. Junior Brown. Toby Keith. Not sure what counts as traditional - it's all good to me! ;-)

Daryl Singletary: I challenge anyone to refute this as traditional. The following 2 aren't really his best but all I could find on you tube.

Ditto.....

I like the underground traditional country that is being played all over the place. The list below is just a sampling of some great artists. I'd like to add
BR549, Big Sandy and the Fly-Rite Boys and The Gin Palace Jesters.

Does Jim Reeves count??

I've got an old double album that used to belong to my parents with all his great songs on it. He had a great voice....... if very over orchestrated arrangements sometimes.

Hey, no problem. I so totally agree with your assessment of the Time Jumpers that the least I can do is look up the url for you. I guess a distinction could be made between Western Swing and Trad. Country, but they do enough traditional country to qualify, in my book.

I looked them up earlier today on youtube. They are a smokin band. This is why I like starting threads like this. I get to hear music I may have missed. I could have done without hank3 though. He may be some low class idea of traditional country but I'd never place him in the same category as Merle or George. Not even close. Just a low brow rebelious against the establishment performer that can't sing.

I know one of these folks hasn't been in a position to record anything in the last 10 years, (Patsy's been gone a long time, now) but if you want traditional country as I understand it, this list will do fine.

Somebody new doing it better? Well, I apologize. The Nashville Pop Hit Machine has done such a good job of sucking the life, the fun out of all things "country" I am not inclined to be as thorough as I probably should be. It is a major disservice that the Nashville Pop Hit Machine has hijacked the "country music" label and made such a terrible, disgusting shame of it.

What would Hank think?

I see this sentiment expressed here over and over.

But country has always been influenced heavily by pop. Always.

In the 30s it was hillbilly boogie. In the 40s it was western swing. In the 50s it was rockabilly. In the 60s it was orchestral string sections. And so on.

And in each case, the traditionalists of the times complained bitterly about it. But what can you do? Music changes, tastes change.

No offense to anyone, but I really have to laugh at what some folks consider traditional country. Jimmie Dale Gilmore? LOL! He was a big part of the "progressive country" movement of the 70s that was condemned by Nashville traditionalists like Justin Tubb.

I'm liking what Redd Volkaert is doing. That's pretty tradtional to my ears. I also like Shania Twain and The Dixie Chicks. Martina McBride's new one is also pretty good. Then, of course, there's Paul Brandt and Alan Jackson. And, it's not all country, but Allison Kraus and Robert Plant did some very nice traditional music on their album.

I agree that out of todays singers Daryl Singletary is the one cutting the real traditional stuff, he has really turned away from eradio friendly material . His last 2 albums are by far his best.Do you have Staight from the heart?? It's got the bottle let me down, Jesus and Bartenders, Miami My Amy............great album

The album Gene Watson Sings is also great, another great traditionalist is Wesley Dennis

Great post. I've got another take or story along these lines. The band I'm includes my brother in law and we were in a band in the early 70's that was Byrds, Burritos, Poco influenced, doing a lot of that when it was not popular. Down through the years we've continued to listen to country and country influenced music, along with blues, jazz, classical and whatever. However other members of the band, we're in and some of the hangers on, will sometimes say, "I hate country" out of the blue. So, every once in a while when were at either of our homes or somewhere else and we'll hear a really great country number, we'll just look at each other and one of us will say "I hate country" and just crack up. Thing is though, we've brought in country style numbers, like Buddy Miller's version of a "Showman's Life" and they love that. Who knows, its just folks I guess.

close, but no cigar...i'm not the guy that you are speaking of...the gentleman you are talking about WAS on his way to visit me for 2 weeks (his second visit)...he and i became good fast friends via this forum about 5 -6 years ago, and he has graced me and Lady bender-freak with two visits of 2 weeks each, coming all the way from Perth, Western Australia.....you are speaking of forum member john s, plays lead for Peter Busher and Lone Star Rangers....great, great guy...he hasn't posted in forever; hope he's all right..

and....yes...he is QUIte amazing on a telecaster or the Gibby jazz box of mine he took back home with him on his last visit....he does bender licks that i only think about....just about anything he does is stuff i only wish i could do..

wish i could keep my mouth shut and let the guys/girls here THINK i met you and was at the show and was amazing....maybe someday i'll get to meet you....

anyway, all of you keep up the great stuff....i likey....
