I You Had To Choose Just One...............
:D And I bet I get a very partial answer but I'll ask it anyway.
In between sessions yesterday, I decided to get my mind off of things by visiting several music stores in the area. I stopped in a Sam Ash, a Guitar Center, a Brook Mays Store and Fat Sound. Most of these places really push more beginner to middle ground gear as opposed to more boutique stuff like McInturffs, Suhrs, Zions, Bakers etc. I had a chance to play a lot of guitars yesterday, Gibsons, Fenders, Godins, Schecters, Ibanezs, ESP's and it was uncanny to me that based on initial feel and set-up, playability and ergonomics, the time tested Fender designs just felt perfect in my hands. Mind you, I started my serious guitar period on Gibson Gear. So my question-If you had to pick one brand of guitar that almost always "just feels right" right out of the box, what would it be? (excluding the customs and boutique brands) We're talking about the mainstream stuff here. :) www.soundclick.com/bands/2/musicallymrmmusic.htm

Really impossible for me to answer.......
I can go into GC and play 10 different teles, and half will feel and sound good, and half wont.
I guess the last good electric guitar I took off the wall and played was a 52 RI tele at the Indy Sam Ash. A mile away they have an indentical 52 RI that is crap. The luck of the draw, I guess. Sometimes it just works, and sometimes it just doesn't. Incidently, I bought a guitar that same day at Sam Ash.....and it was a Gibson Acoustic. It just spoke to me so whatcha gonna do? |

Epiphone!!! Believe it or not, Epiphone necks are the standard by which all other necks are judged (by me). When I pick up a Gibson Les Paul, I think to myself "self, you can't believe the cheap, crappy feel of this $1500 neck." Something about them just fits in my hand better than any other. The neck on my Tele Special has a very similar profile to the one on my Epi SG, albeit a little slimmer overall. I find most of the cheap Epi's to have similar necks, and I like 'em all. One of the best guitars I ever owned was a Epi double cutaway LP JR. ...Now if I could just stand to look at the headstocks...

Well, when we went on vacation last month I got the chance to play about 15-20 guitars. I played Fenders, Gibsons, Peaveys, and more. I was looking for some fixer-uppers to part or sell, but I also played some nice ones I wanted to take home for me: a cool 90's Contemporary Strat in pink, a really good Fat Tele, a Cort that had two P-90s and needed a setup really bad but was pretty good otherwise. The one that I wanted to come home with (but didn't unfortunately) more than any other was a new Fernandez double bound Tele. Not sure of the model but it had a perfect neck, good solid feel, proper Tele sound, and good fretwork. Instead, I bought a couple of amps: another Peavey Bravo and a Fender Blues DeVille.

I bought a Ric 360 at Sam Ash on Monday.
I took it back on Tuesday. The manager wanted to cry.

Ben ain't alone on Epiphone...
If the recession gets so bad.....
I'll keep my "factory 2nd Joe Pass Blondie" I can play it on the corner for nickels and dimes. I agree that it has the most playable neck with 11's. Years ago I was such a gear snob, "like a rolling stone". Now all that matters is: How's it play? How's it sound? It's emotional. My soulmate's a factory 2nd like it's owner
