Mail order lobsters?

Hey all, I want to order live Maine lobsters for the GF's birthday this week. Anybody have any positive or negative experiences to share? A supplier to recommend? Thanks, KC

I'd just run down to Kroger and grab a couple for about $12 a piece (they're usually $9.99 or $10.99/lb). That's what I do a couple times a year. There's not much to the mail order thing. If they're alive when you get them you're good; if not you're out the money and better make other plans real quick. That's why a decent grocery store is your best bet.

We ordered some when we lived in colorado for a party... tres bien! all were alive upon arrival (one was pretty dang sluggish though) but all tasted very good. It was a good experience... it was 10 years ago though... my bet is they have it even more figured out... I think we got ours from a company called seawitch....

12 bucks? Man I feel bad for you guys. Just down the road theres a truck that sells 'em for 3.99 a pound.

But you can have lobsters mailed to you? Am I understanding this correctly?

yep. there are a bunch of companies that pack and ship live lobsters (from maine!) to your door. The company we used guaranteed them live or a refund.... We ordered a bunch (like 30) and they were all fine...

Fedex is the key.

Yeah, they've been at $3.99 for a while now - the industry is really bottoming out. Plenty of retailers will ship 'em to you. Google around.

Don't know how much they charge for shipping, but if Kroger's is selling 'em for $9.99....

If I remember my lobster trivia correctly...while they may be caught near Maine, they are shipped to someplace near Louisville KY and kept in holding tanks until their number is up and they get shipped from the UPS hub there.

Well I have a recent mail order lobster story to recount. My daughter and son-in-law bought my wife and I and the son-in-laws parents "Lobstergrams".
The Lobstergram package contains live lobsters, salad, lobster bisque and a delicious chocolate cake. Well ayway we were supposed to eat our lobster dinners on New Year's eve - unfortunately, daddy-in-law fell down and broke his hip (this was his birthday too). He had to have emergency surgery. Meanwhile these lobsters are out in the garage waiting to be cooked and consumed. We ended up eating them on New Year's day and they were delicious. Lobster bisque was great, nice salad, etc. The poor in-laws missed out but we're planning on doing it again when the dad heals.

After the Lobstergram adventure the wife and I bought 2 small frozen caribbean lobster tails for $9.99. Something we had never done before. A few minutes in boiling water and it's lobster time. We think they tasted as good as the live lobsters without the hassle of cracking claws, etc. Also much cheaper than the mail order thing.

I was going to mention Lobstergrams as well, though I don't have any personal experiences with them, I just have a crush on Kelly Ripa, and they were giving certificates to Lobstergram on Kelly & Regis awhile back...

I've never heard of that. Why would they ship to Kentucky? When you call to place an order, just ask the lobster pound whether they ship direct.

Not that live lobsters shipped from Kentucky would taste different than live lobsters shipped from Maine....

PS -

My friend Steve had some midwestern relatives visiting. Took 'em out for lobster. Folks loved it, so when they went home, Steve sent 'em a crate of live lobbies.

Never got a thank-you. So the next time he saw them, he asked whether they'd ever gotten them.

They looked at each other in that you-tell-him-no-you-tell-him way, and finally one of them said, "Yeah, they came. But they were sort of greenish ,and they were moving real slow. So we buried 'em."

Good fertilizer, anyway....

Is it just me or what ?

Something about cooking a live lobster has always made me cringe and to have them sent by post just seems horrible to me..aaaargh.
To me it's kinda like looking in a field of calves and saying I want that one for lunch.
I'll take the flames (better than the lobsters) but it's just my opinion and I don't condemn anyone else for doing it.
