Trad Honky Tonk

You know the kind: prominent pedal steel, twin Texas fiddles, cheatin/love songs, Smoky the Bar, etc.
I want to thank the poster here who turned me on to Kimberly Murray. She just makes my head spin! I'm ordering her cd today today. She and Amber are something else!

Who are some of you ol geisers favorites?

Justin Trevino and Bobby Flores come to mind, as do James Hand and Dale Watson and Heybale.

As somewhat of an old school country picker, I am delighted that these new artists have refreshed this music and are carrying it forward. I also love to watch the Nashville establishment scramble.

In case there is anyone who doesn't know, Willie's Place on XM/Sirrius plays these artists and many more worth listening to. I have even heard Delbert McClinton and Marcia Ball on Willie's Place. Good stuff.

Though they're not quite the line-up you've described, you might enjoy some of the YouTube cuts of the Texas Tornadoes. At least the Teles are out in force. Good bar band dance music.

Westex93,
Thank you sooooo much; I'm in love with Kimberly and Amber!
THAT is the way it's supposed to sound, and my weather beaten straw hat off to you and them! I think K even figured out who you were from an E I sent her on Myspace; but you are still anonymous in my book.
I can't figure it sometimes..... Rockabilly made a big comeback for awhile, ABBA gets films made about them, Hard/Metal never seems to have quit, Blues has it's ups and downs with newer audiences, but where, oh where, is the audience waiting to make these girls dreams come true? This stuff is as pure a genre (honky tonk) as any I have ever heard, but it doesn't seem to make waves outside of Texas. The RFF which has a 3 day fest in Oct. has had Dale, and Cindy Cashdollar in the past 2 years; so I'm going to try to convince them to book Kimberly, Amber, or both for next fall.

so who are your faves Mr D (and thanks for the other inputs too; they are the keepers of the flame).
It just occurred to me how old I am getting (58) when I don't see more rah-rahs for folks like Webb, and others; and mind you youngsters.. I didn't discover Hank and Webb until I was in my early 20's; long past one's heyday, and long past one's life. There is so much good music you won't ever hear unless some kind souls on the net makes you aware of them, or great off beat radio stations as mentioned, and my favorite one of all to plug: KUT in Austin.

Yes, that is your name she mentioned. She must be one terrific girl!
After looking at her pics though, I hope MCP's (male chauvinist pigs) don't start comparing Dolly's other features with hers; and I do mean that kiddingly.

And since you're looking for other recommendations, have you found Miss Leslie and her Juke-jointers?

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...endID=21022280

Her's Justin Trevino's page:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...ndID=200033596

How 'bout Tony Booth? Tony was a Texas favorite and up-and-comer in the 60's. He moved, I think to Montana for many years. Still makes some great music.

See if that keeps you busy a while!

That James fella is excellent!
I always thought there was something about the limestone aquifers that made Texas women so darn pretty, and now I'm thinking the same must be true for REAL country music.
First time I was in Austin (79) I was at a club/bar/saloon catching some good music and one thing that struck me odd was the mixture of people in that beer joint. There were small children dancing along with young adults, old adults, and grandparents!
I thought that was so cool; you will never see something like that back east.

There are three of us here in Pittsburgh that are putting together a trad honky tonk band mixed with a little hillbilly. Upright bass, shuffling drums, and acoustic guitar/singing. We're on the lookout for a lead guitarist and steel guitarist to round out the lineup. We'd love to have a fiddle player or mando player. Unfortunately, it seems that players that dig this music are rare round Pittsburgh.
.
We love playing this music.

Check out The Gin Palace Jesters, a great traditional band out of Chicago. Also, you can never go wrong with Big Sandy and The Fly-Rite Boys or BR549.

Good for you!
If more people heard this stuff live and up close, there would be a lot of new fans
outside Texas. Trouble is, I think most folks see this as a novelty or relic of the past; but why should this be different than the ongoing tradition of bluegrass or rockabilly which have both done fairly well with new audiences?
I'm sure there are steel players to be found if you look hard enough.
There is a wealth of classic material available, and it should not be difficult to do some originals given the established nature of the song formats.
Good luck!

Well, I'm just getting into Honky Tonk at the ripe old age of 34. Part of the problem I have is that since I wasn't raised hearing it, it's hard for me to play, and I don't really have the cash to buy a huge amount of music to pick through it. I think that it kind of gets absorbed into either "country" or "americana" these days. speaking of, I also love Western swing, but again, I do not have a lot of it to learn from, and, to be frank, it's damn hard to learn. Isn't there some good player in Tampa/St. Pete that wants to pass the torch?

Dijos,
When I can find the time, I'll make you a "sampler" cd of some essential stuff to hear. Early George Jones, Hank Sr, Webb Pierce, Wynn Stewart, etc, and some newer stuff like Dale Watson, Amber Digby, Kimberly Murray.

Give me a few weeks or so and I'll get it done. Most of my music is in the garage and it's 20 degrees out there right now

Bobby Flores looks real good from the instrument lineup and the song choices. I will definitely give them a listen.!

Join the Steel Guitar Forum. I think it costs $5.00 and it's a great network for steel guitarists and anyone who loves steel guitar. There's a Jobs section in the classifieds.

little joe carson was a highly influential texas artist that is somewhat overlooked because his career was unfortunately cut short by an early death at 27 in '64... i can't recommend his bear family compilation enough... i love charlie walker too... tj

Thanks for the Joe Carson link! I remember the Gotta Get Drunk song, but not by him. But then in '63 the only country I listened to was Patsy, Marty, and Cash.
He's a good'n all right. Too bad he left us too soon.
