Why is a nut called a nut?

It occurred to me that I don't know the answer to this question. Wouldn't it have made more sense (originally, at least) to call it a "bone"?

Or, if you were to sticck with the whole headstock/neck/body terminology, shouldn't the nut be called the "collar" or the "necktie"?

I'm only being halfway tongue-in-cheek here. "Bridge" I can understand at least somewhat, since it kinda looks like a bridge. The nut on a guitar, on the other hand, looks nothing like a nut. At least not the kind of nuts we have around here.

all i can tell you is what Wiki sez:
The word is thought to have come from the German Nut ( pronounced "noot"), meaning "groove" or "slot".

Someone asked me the same question recently and my only reply was "I don't know, never really gave it any thought." I just figured that it was some kind of hold over from violin making or something like that.

Now I'm going your answer Woodman. Sounds good to me.

Because you couldn't really call it an a##. That's the only reason.

If she still did, she would, but she doesn't, so she's not.

hey I didn't even know that it was borrowed from the german language - on the other hand I didn't give it a second thought.

actually the nut is called "Sattel" in german, saddle in english. but that name is already taken for the bridge-saddles.

But then if had a bone one you'd have to call it a bone bone.

All kinds of places you could go with that one.

What's worse - a bone bone, or a bone nut?

Watch out, there are some knights who get agitated if they hear you say that at them.

Perhaps it's because it's the nought fret...

I asked Dee what she thought the answer should be - she asked if it's because they used to be made out of nuts. Absolutely no lateral thinking going on there then.

Minky thinks that they should be called bones but then she does have a rather limited vocabulary.

I'm just glad that whoever named the parts of the guitar deciding to call that a nut rather than the tuners. The idea of seeing a stage full of old codgers adjusting their nuts in the middle of a set bothers me for some reason.

The question now is...

Why are they called frets? They don't look very worried.

Then on Gretches, the first fret is a Frought.

...but, why is a short pipe called a nipple?

I believe they are one in the same, yes.

Now, if I could just find a good shrubber (not too expensive).

Fret

I hope you meant "shrubbery". I've not met a man who really enjoyed a meeting with a true shrubber.

Are you suggesting that Roger is not a true shrubber, though it is known by many that he arranges, designs and sells shrubberies? Yay, I believe this humble shrubber, indeed "Roger The Shrubber", is more than capable of executing a shrubbery of the finest design incorporating the two level effect with a little stream down the middle and still keeping same within the limited purse strings of the client!

I am happy to discuss nuts all day with you sir, but I will NOT stand for a slight of R.T.S!

Good day sir.
