turn off the heat, open a window...
My first year in Kentucky, I lived in Beattyville (up in the mountains) and I couldn't afford to turn on the gas... I used a hot plate and a hot pot... the hot water was provided by the building (I was over an old repair garage) I remember a stretch where it was so cold in the apt that there was ice in my toilet... I had a big feather comforter that was about 18 in thick... I'd be so cozy when the alarm would go off.. I'd sprint to the shower turn the hot water on full and back under the covers until the steam would come around the corner into my room... I had everything set to make coffee etc on a timer... I only used my electric space heater at night... I loved that comforter on those cold mornings... those were good days! Frequently, I'd hop a coal train to the foot of the hill just below Lee County High school (about a mile) as the train was going about 3-5 mph through town... it would shake my apt when it went by full. We had one traffic light in the whole county back then and it flashed yellow most of the day...

My current comforter is a Shepard/Rotti mix. I call her Penny and I got her at a half price sale at the Humane Society. My last comforter was a yellow Lab too. They make really good comforters.

I sleep under a duvet every night.
I find it difficult to sleep without one no matter how warm the room is, it just feels wrong.. The house I share with my friends has a habit of bleeding heat like no tomorrow, so it's a necessity! It's insane, you turn the heating on - the house gets really warm, you turn it off and within an hour it's FREEZING. Fortunately my radiator is right next to my computer chair. |

As far as comforter/duvets go, I've noticed when I've traveled to the UK, most places use duvets with no other sheets or blankets. When that happens I sweat my butt off in bed. I need something covering me, but duvet is usually too much. Personally, I prefer the sheet/blanket/comforter combo so I can control the amount of insulation. I'm usually under just a sheet and my wife is under all three plus an extra blanket and a cat. |

So, what gauge strings do you use on a duvet? Will an Allparts neck fit on one? And would new pickups improve the tone? Inquiring minds want to know.
(My wife bought me a lamb's wool blanket for our anniversary. I haven't slept this warm in years.)

My dad used to smoke Chesterfields, Then he switched to Camels. I prefer smoking a beef brisket, myself.

I'm suddenly reminded of an old Three Stooges film, in which not only were they actors in a play, they also had to prepare the cake that was to be eaten onstage. One of the cake layers was accidentally substituted with a chair cushion, and hilarity ensued...
Moe: "Miss Janie Bell, what do you all call this delicious cake?" Janie Bell: "I calls it Old Pointe Comfort." Moe (aside to Shemp): "Old Pointe Comfort? Tastes more like an old comforter!"

Living in south Florida we use a comforter just to make the bed look pretty, but we don't actually sleep under it. I prefer those Mexican throw blankets, they keep ya warm wet or dry, don't take up a lot of room and last forever. I know they are Mexican and not American classics, but I love my MIM blanket.

Yes chet, those girls who are still alive talk and need food... I think start with a feather filled cover first and we'll move onto the whole 'dating' thing at a later date..

Pulled the trigger and got the Comforter at Wal-Mart Saturday night.
I have to give it 2 thumbs up on a night like last night. Turned the heat off and it was windy and in the teens outside. I was warm and toasty.

I've always been used to sleeping with a sheet and light blanket on, even on our cold canadian winter nights.
When I moved in with my gf a year ago, I realized she has a thick comforter, an electric blanket and two large dogs that like to curl up in bed with us. A common occurence is me waking up in a sweat in the middle of the night, with her body against mine, and the dogs filling every available space on either side of us. And if I get up, the dogs will have taken my spot in bed and pretend to be asleep so as not to be moved. Who needs a duvet when you have a built-in sauna? |

I can't stand sweating in bed. It happens sometimes for no reason I can figure out.
I'll alternate between the blanket and comforter as needed.
