Ry Cooder DVD
Any of you guys know more about this? Is it originally a bootleg that's now official? When was it recorded (70's?) and who are in his band?
Lots of questions, but my friend who is the world's biggest Cooder-fan, wonders if it may be the same as one of his many bootlegs ... http://www.101cd.com/DVD/Ry-Cooder-L...62/product.htm |

I saw a comment on Amazon about this "unofficial" release.
Very poor quality, apparently. Judging by the material, I would guess 1974 or so. Flaco on some tracks. I'm mad about Ry, but this one seems so-so.

Hi, Eddie!
Hopefully I'll get them tomorrow! I saw another, semi-official looking Cooder DVD the other day. The cover looked a bit like the "Why Don't You Try Me" compilation album. Quality appeared to be good. I had the pleasure of seeing the man around 1980. I seem to recall you saw him then too, Telemarkman! I get the feeling Cooder is comparatively big in Europe. Into the Purple Valley went gold in Holland, I've heard.

A friend of mine has a dvd of Ry in the 70's - in fact it's a double disc with several concerts on one disc (I think 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' from the BBC was 1 of them) and the other disc is a concert featuring music from the 'Jazz' album.
He lent these to me a while ago and I remember being very disappointed in both the picture and sound quality on these. But the music itself was great and seeing Ry and the band play was worthwhile. I don't know if I would buy them myself though - and I do love Mr Cooder's work.

Thanks for bringing this up. I just bought it: a mere £6 on play.com, with free delivery.
I've seen some of the clips on youtube and they're cool. Band has Keltner, Milt Holland and Tim Drummond in it. Nice to see/hear Ry with a wee band. Even if the pic quality's rough, why worry, eh: it's Ry, in a good era, and it's £6! |

Thanks guys!
My friend wanted it anyway, so I've already ordered it for him ... I'm glad to hear he's got some of the "good guys" with him. And yes, byrdbrain, I was at the Cooder concert in Oslo in 1980. |
