BB King - "My Kind Of Blues"

I was recently given a copy of this great old album, which is said to be one of BB's favorites from his catalog. I guess it was released in 1961, and it doesn't have the horns featured on most of his recorded material that I've heard.

The guitar definitely sounds more "Fendery" than usual on it. I've seen old pictures of him with a Telecaster, but this sounds a lot like a Strat to me. At any rate, I wondered if anyone knew what type of guitar he recorded with for this album.

BB had an Esquire very briefly, and I'm not sure he ever recorded with it. I think all his recording was done on Gibsons of various kinds. In 1961 he was playing ES-355s.

It doesn't take much for a semihollow to sound Fendery. And BB uses that Varitone a lot, which helps get all those different tones.

I'm gonna have to check this one out. I've always wanted BB to play/record an album w/o horns. Can't wait to give it a listen

My Kind of Blues is my favorite studio BB King album. Nothing beats the live side of Greatest Moments with BB King, with Willie's Night Life, but there's something charming and introspective about My Kind of Blues, BB in his prime.

Regarding the Telecaster, I think BB was on to semi-hollows by 61, as already mentioned, but I did find this shot from an earlier effort:

i recently picked up a dvd of bb's with some concert footage filmed in the 70's.

his touch and attack on lucille was sometimes as gentle as a caress... other times he was ferociously digging into the strings with sharp, stacatto, stinging lines... grimacing and yanking and pulling lucille into his groin. amazing!!!

unbelievable to see his tremendous emotion pouring into, and out from lucille. it gave me chills.

i cant express into words what bb king means to me...

i hope he lives forever.

dvd was "live at nicks." and yes, there are horns.

imho.

"My Kind Of Blues" is not just my favorite BB record, it's one of my favorite any kind of records. All the constellations were in the exact right place when they cut that thing, just like "Kind of Blue" or "Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East." Deep deep stuff. His tone on it sounds more like a gibson singlecoil to me, almost T-Bone territory, a P-90 or maybe a P-13.
