Remember BADFINGER? 70's rock

When I was a teenager I remember hearing this band and was totally diggin' their sound. I still think they had a very destinctive sound.
Check this clip out:

i don't remember the name of it, but there is an incredible documentary about Badfinger that details the greatest rip off in rock and roll history. at one point their song catalog was earning more than the beatles and the most they ever made was 300 bucks a week.

it ended in suicide of one or maybe two of the members.

incredible story and very sad.

Badfinger? You mean The Iveys.

Paul McCartney took the Iveys and made them top sellers. Gave them Beatles songs and engineered their success. Paul thought their name wasn't "dirty" enough. He came up with "Badfinger" cause it didn't sound nice.

Their first hit was, "Come and Get it". Paul wrote it for the Beatles. The Beatles recorded it and it was mixed and all done. But since Apple was new and they wanted their new label to have some hits they brought in the Iveys, played them the finished Beatles version of the song and told them to not change a thing. To copy it note for note and make it sound exactly the same.

They did that and surprise... they had a number one hit right out of the box.

I keep looking for Iveys LPs. I've only seen one and it was in horrible shape or I'd own it. I'm still looking.

PS. The Beatles version is on Anthology (III, I think).

Check out the Peter Seller's movie "The Magic Christian" (I think that's the name)

Great movie and Badfinger in soundtrack

Baby Blue is one of my top 10 fave songs - one of the reasons I picked up the guitar in the first place!

You may be referring to VH1's Behind The Music: Badfinger. There is also a book called - Without You : The Tragic Story of Badfinger. Two members committed suicide, Pete first, and then Tom, years later.

They were song writers and musicians unto themselves and I never really thought of them being like the Beatles.

I love Badfinger. I can't listen to those guys - or The Raspberries - or Big Star - and NOT hear The Beatles influence. But that's a good thing, not a bad thing. It doesn't mean that they didn't have their own sound, because they certainly did.

Have to say that I'm partial to the concise pop radio hit arrangements. I have BBC in Concert 1972-1973 LIVE on CD, and those guys were, at times, a jam band - but who wasn't at the time, right? They even covered the old chestnut, "Feelin' Alright". It's a good, historically interesting listen that I dig out now and then, but I vastly prefer the classic studio cuts - "Come And Get It", "Day After Day", "No Matter What", "Baby Blue", all the great radio hits... back when mainstream radio still had great radio hits.

Day After Day is one of my favourite songs of all time. So much tragedy surrounding the group however...

I saw Badfinger live in 1971, they opened for Lee Michaels at a show in San Jose, Ca. My group of buddies were all Beatles fans and therefore Badfinger fans. They were a real tight band, and put on a great show. It is sad what happened to them, but there were a thousand other bands at that time that shared their fate.
My Mom used to work with a guy from Question Mark and the Mysterians who had a hit with "96 Tears". They still get together and perform every now and then, but they all work regular jobs now. At that time, one hit record didn't net you much.

That explains why they were on the Apple Label! I've always wondered why until now. My brother brought home the BABY BLUE 45 one day back in the 70s, and it looked earily similar to the Beatles records.

I've always loved the sound of the cool guitar fill-in notes on BABY BLUE. It looks like the guy is just using an SG plugged directly into a silver face. My silver face never sounded like that.

That's my recollection of the band too.

We had a Beatlesque band here in Toronto called Klaatu that had the rumour mills going at full tilt. It was fun while it lasted.

"No Matter What" may be the greatest power pop tune of all time.

Brilliant and tragic what happened with that band.

great, great band!

my favorite Badfinger song wasn't a hit. it is the closing track from the album "No Dice"....somebody put some photos to it and posted it on youtube. for those who haven't heard it before, treat yourself to "We're For The Dark":

btw: a little clarification on the name:

Their original name: "The Iveys" was sometimes confused with "The Ivy League", and the name was considered too trite for the current music scene. After much debate, the group changed their name to Badfinger. Other suggestions had included: "The Glass Onion," "The Prix", and "The Cagneys" from John Lennon, and "Home" by Paul McCartney.

The name Badfinger was suggested by Apple's Neil Aspinall as a reference to "Bad Finger Boogie", an early working title of Lennon's "With a Little Help from My Friends", so-called because Lennon had composed the melody on a piano using his middle finger, after having hurt his forefinger.

I remeber them! I still have their first elpee, which is very very good indeed. We never quite bought 'it's really the Beatles' rumors; we just enjoyed their music. Did y'all know that Todd Rundgren can sound like the Beatles when he wants to? And so can that other guy; umm Jeff Lynne. Yeah, that guy too

Anyways thanks for the cool Badfinger vids. My old 3-pc band did No Matter What; unfortunately I lacked the Leslie, but we made it work anyways. That whole era of pre-synth power pop got the short end of the stick when it came to radio programming... I loved the style: take melodic Beatles-type pop gems, and crank up the guitars. Badfinger. Dwight Twilley. Raspberries. Cheap Trick. Still one of my favorite musical eras...

The "Beatles" version (on Anthology III) is just Paul. He went into the studio an hour before the others came in when they were recording "Abbey Road", and recorded "Come and Get It", overdubbing himself on drums, bass, guitar, etc. It's unclear if Paul wrote it for the Beatles, since he had written songs for other artists before.

BTW, for a lesser-known Badfinger gem, check out "Wish You Were Here", they're last album before Pete Ham committed suicide. The album was only out for a month, then pulled for legal reasons, so it's a real lost classic. IIRC, it only made it to CD in Europe, and is OOP in the US (but is not too hard to find, thanks to the internet).

+1 mine, too! I have Apple-labeled 45s of Come and Get It and Day After Day. I think they're the last vinyl I own.

Peter Ham's voice really fit the music and the guitar sounds in some of those songs was so awesome. Simple but full of cool.

I think I still have 'Come & Get It' on vinyl somewhere in the collection. I remember buying it when it first came out.

Another similar band from the 70's with great harmonies was the Sutherland Brothers (with and without Quiver). I saw them several times in the mid 70's and they were great. I've also got all their albums but can only find a few cruddy videos of them on YouTube. I'd love to see some more of their appearances on the 'Old Grey Whistle Test' and any other programmes they appeared on. Anybody got any idea if there are any available?

One of my bands played the after game dance circuit in the Portland, Oregon area in 1971. Gladstone High School had a jukebox in the cafeteria where we played several times that had Come and Get It. I would plug the quarters into that thing to play the song over and over while we set up and tore down. I almost didn't want to play so that I could listen to the song over and over. No Matter What, also, was just stirring.

I believe they played on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass and Concert for Bangladesh as an acoustic guitar and tambourine section. Good blend.

Oh Yeah!
Am I imagining things, or is that a very young Kenny Rogers introducing the band in that clip?

Yup...I'm pretty sure that's Kenny.
I never missed an episode of "Kenny Rogers and the First Edition"
Beautiful performance.
I thought it was a lip-sync thing at first because it sounded so great, but I think it's live.
Pete Hamm also wrote one of my favorites, "Without You" by Nilsson.
I wonder if Badfinger ever played or recorded it.
Jeeze...I remember listening to Day After Day in the car on the way back from the beach when it first hit the radio. It went right to my center. I was just a kid.
Beautiful, amazing song!
