Black & Decker Screw Finder????

I've had a couple of these things over the years, but I have no clue how to use them.

Black & Decker calls them "Screw finders".

They are a small gray plastic tube with a spring inside. I did find they are supposed to be for screwing in slotted screws strait, but I still have no clue how to use them.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure. Can you post a picture?

I got one of those when I was single. Truth in advertising laws need a serious overhaul.

If it's like the screw finders I've used, you just slide the tube over the screw while the slotted bit is held in the tube. It helps keep everything aligned and helps keep the bit from coming out of the slot.

Dave is correct. The B&D ones have never worked all that well for me, but if you google "screw starters", you'll find much better ones at very good prices. Invaluable for places you can't reach with fingertips. Though I've found just a bit of electrical tape wrapped around both the screw and the driver tip will get me there as well. The last one I used had two finger like prongs that held screw to either a flat tip or phillips tip for more stability. I liked that one.

I'm not sure where you would need something like that in guitar building. Perhaps you're thinking of a jig you would use to drill straight holes, in place of a drill press.
