Local supermarket closes down **fast**
Went over yesterday to get supplies and things looked sparse. I asked the Deli guy if the store was closing and he said "Yeah, it closes Sep. 5th."
I know they had a power failure when a bad thunderstorm went by one night and it looked like they lost a lot of perishables but I can't help wondering if the rising fuel/heating/cooling costs just got to be too much for them. It's a bummer cause the store is about 3 blocks from me and now I'd have to go over a mile to get groceries. That store had a few items that the others didn't carry also. Wonder if it's a sign of things to come? |

We just had our longtime local grocery store close when a newer, bigger and better-stocked Food Lion store opened nearby. The old place was called Food City, previously it was Meatland (I sure loved that name!), and it too is a chain grocery store. But that chain was stodgy and low-budget (the store felt like a time machine set to 1972), and they went down fast once there was competition...
Back when I lived in Fort Collins, Colorado, we had a great locally-owned grocery outfit (they had three or four stores) that went bankrupt when the city tore up the road in front of their brand-new flagship store, making access incredibly difficult. That one REALLY hurt, they were a great, great outfit... Cheers, Tim

I spent summer down here at the beach when I was in college in the 80s, along with my bandmates, and we all got Meatland bumper stickers to put on our guitar cases...
Cheers, Tim

We said good-bye to the Crispie Cream donut shop months ago. Only one in town. Now, where my daughter works, Cold Stone Ice Cream, word is they are struggling and trying lower prices. Pushing advertising by handing out leaflets and standing on street corners holding signs. I can't hardly enjoy those luxuries, family and all. Hopefully the ma and pop stores can ride out these rough seas...smooth sailing comin soon?

FWIW- We don't have the combo grocery store/Wal-Marts around my area. They do have a small selection but not enough for me to want to wait in thier long, slow lines for that.

I could see a KK going out of business, but no way the entire company.

Wholesale prices have gone up because diesel is still very high.
The really big box places like Target and Wal Mart have their supply lines better locked in, and they just tighten the screw on their suppliers. After Katrina a LaFourche Parish based outfit called Rouse's came into New Orleans and really wowed a lot of people for a time; a lot of introductory loss leading. But that is now over and the differences in the prices is shocking, there's no other term for the increases. Meanwhile if you're careful on item choices at Target, the prices can be the same as a year ago. Weird. Little Debbie's Snack Cakes have gone up.

reminds me of the Paul Young song:
