DREWB or other Kansas City area members!
I am looking for a good, trust worthy guitar tech familiar with teles. I used to use Scotty's guitars in Independence but he moved. Do you guys use anybody you would recommend?

There is a guy named George that goes around and picks up guitars at area music stores, I drop mine off at Mountain Music Shoppe in Shawnee. George does great work!
it's a week turn around usually but it's worth it. |

I can vouch for the guys at Moutain Music Shop. I'd trust their tech with any of my guits. I'd call there and ask for Mike (I think). Ask him about their tech.
Also, Guitar Source down there by Oak Park Mall has a good guitar tech that will actually get involved with you. He will look at you playing and watch your playing style and set you up proper. He costs a bit though. http://www.guitarsourcekc.com/display.php?t=16 http://www.mountainmusicshoppe.com/ |

Dang. There are more KC folks on here than I thought. We're multiplying!
Do you guys ever go to Bentley's Guitar Studio up in Parkville? http://www.bentleyguitars.com/ |

Don't forget the guy who puts an ad on CL almost every day! OK, seriously, if I needed work done, I'd have Keith George do it, but that's just because I've seen his work and thought he did a good job. There are some guys whose work I've seen that would have had me "sending it back to the kitchen."

There is a great tech North of the river, near Zona Rosa, name is Dave Seuferling, www.seufsrepair.com. He has Scotty's old lead tech, Mike, working with him. he is reasonable, does great work.
The reason I don't like Keith George is that it is difficult to see him. He makes all the rounds at the guitar shops to pick up and drop off guitars, but I like to be able to talk to the tech face to face, especially if you are getting more work done than just a set up. Dave is great, he'll take time to get to know exactly what you want. He is very busy, and for all you in Joco, jackson Co, may not be the most convenient, but if you are looking for a great tech, he is a good one. He also does build jobs, and is not afraid to repair a vintage instrument.

the tech I referenced above has a couple of his relic parts guitars there on display... he does a pretty good job of relicing, if you are in to that kind of thing

Keith did a neck reset and refret on my brother's Gibson J-50 back in February, and it came back amazing. It needed a reset when I started playing in '83, and it was almost breathtaking to experience what that guitar has going on for the first time. I talked to Keith about the repair a few months prior to the work being done, and he called my brother after he had a chance to look it over. From drop-off at Bently's to pick-up, it was less than two weeks.

I don't feel like I need to chime in here, since what I was gonna respond with has already been mentioned.....
But, Mountain Music Shop, drop off yer tele and some dude comes around once a week and picks 'em up. A week later he drops 'em off. I had my beloved mid '90s MIJ '69 Thinline RI get a fret job a year or two ago. Good work, played better than ever upon its return. On a side note, Mountain Music is around the corner from my house. Though I'm a little suspicious of them. I took in my old '44 Epiphone there about 5 years ago (old location) to get a new nut installed and the guy behind the counter kept insisting it was a mid '60s. Then he offered me $1000 cash on the spot for the guitar. It felt like he was trying to take me for a sucker, I felt really dissapointed with the place. So I don't shop there much. |

I think it's awfully low-rent of him to glom onto the free advertising that way. It comes off as cheap and fly-by-night, which isn't helped by the text in his ads.

Yeah, I didn't think you had a problem with his work, just his availability. You just about have to pry his phone number out of some of the shops he services. I have his number in my Rolodex at work, just in case.

You know, everyone I share this story with says "That doesnt sound like Jim". And I'm sure he has a reputation for being a fair guy. He wouldnt be in business if he were out to sucker people. It caught me off guard when it happened. But, he's been friendly and courteous every other time I've been in the shop. Helpful and polite. Who knows. It was five years ago. Perhaps he was having a bad day, I don't wanna sound like I'm just slagging the guy. My rhythm guitarist just bought a G&L there and got a good deal. |
