I can answer that question...some people have neighbors from hell. Be careful man, some day you might have a drunken neighbor from hell who lets his pit bull run through your yard.

It can happen to anyone. Instant karma man. You could be next.

You have no idea just how bad it can get, and it is getting there..........

Backing away from thread slowly. Restraining self from opening can of worms or pointing out the 800 pound gorilla setting in the corner of the room. Backing away slowly.............

Life is not fair. It has never been fair and it will never be fair. You cannot win every battle, you cannot always get your way. Unfortunately they are free to do so under the same laws which allow us said freedoms. Past generations accepted this as a part of life and learned and grew from it. Not so much anymore I guess.

BRAVO! Well said.

I've had neighbors from Hell....a couple different times. Know what I did? Worked it out....imagine that...someone actually going and discussing differences with a neighbor.....had to compromise....sure enough..but it got livable.

So maybe we ought to take a lesson from that...and just learn to live with each other's little differences; making adjustments as needed along the way....your way sounds like "roll over and play dead". That ain't for me...

I'll bet they didn't ask either....of course unless you want to assume this renegade architect is also a liar and just told them a story......

Apparently there's no issue about that structure requiring a permit now. We'll never know how that conversation went, but the right way to deal with that question is to submit drawings and get on the record. And he knows better.

Here's the turd that Praisecaster's 800 pound gorilla drops. This isn't political, either, it's idealogical. I pay people to keep me safe, but they never asked me how safe I want to be, or from whom. Now they tell me a need a helmet to j*** off. I have 90 days to comply or be subjected to chemical castration.

the city was ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.
Building codes exist for a reason. different dimentions of wood have different load qualities. AND a structure has to have DEAD LOAD, and LIVE load capacities.
then you're building it ON a living thing that CONSTANTLY moves (if it grows, it moves, people...let alone wind/weather!!!!)

my neighbor just built a treehouse, and of course, i WON'T let my kid inside it b/c i CAN SEE IT'S NOT STRUCTURALLY SOUND. No permit was gotten, and it WAS NOT MADE BY A CARPENTER, it was made by someone who bought carpenters' tools at HD, and a 'how-to' book.

God forbid anything happens to any kids, but i would not be able to live w/ myself if anything were to happen to my kid b/c i didn't think like the crowd and allow my kids to play on an unsafe/unauthorized/illegal/inadequate/ill-constructed tree house.

...dag-nab-it
Im glad my parents let me play with toys and play on and around things that were not 100% safe.
Damnedest thing too, I lived to grow into an adult.

well...how'd you feel about that?
To be honest, it's not my business whether my neighbors want to fix their driveway cracks. You shouldn't have to paint or side your house because your neighbor does. This is just a case of tough luck or should have done better research before buying a house in this neighborhood. I know things happen out of our control, but come on ... we need to start taking a little responsibillity and quit blaming others for everything.

In my area, the ONLY thing you can do to your house w/o a permit is paint it.
Excellent reason why I wouldn't want to live in a town or subdivision. Too many ordanances.

The area that these folks live in is pretty upscale for the Vancouver area. So, yes, there is quite a bit of money tied up in properties. There are also laws, by-laws and zoning restrictions limiting property usage. Add to that contractual obligations when purchasing or selling properties. Homeowners in Vancouver are very protective of their rights to land usage. Things like cutting down trees, or in this case, building (elaborate professionally designed) structures in trees infringe upon others rights and agreements.

I am confident that an architect working and living in Vancouver is aware of what can or cannot be done. The tree house itself looks nice. If he had built it on the ground he may have avoided some trouble.

STOP!

Gorilla warning! I am about to step out of my reserved Canadian politeness, so I will ....

Okay, we've all vented, some for, some against, some just plain angry in general.

Let's move on to other things, shall we?

Cheers, Tim
