I can't believe I read this whole thread.

I drive a lot, and I rarely see anyone doing the speed limit ... it's almost always folks going 10-15mph over the speed limit. Try doing the speed limit anywhere in Dallas and drivers act like the many posters in this thread.

Unless there's a cop -- and then everyone drives at least 5-10mph below the speed limit. Why is that? Don't you speed freaks and anal speed checkers know the speed limit?

This forum is much cooler when we chat about teles and music. I need to stick to those areas!

Pull over. Wait on the side of the road for two songs on your CD player - two great songs you love. In the six or seven minutes this takes you will have relaxed and now be in a better mood ... but best of all, it'll take five minutes to catch up to those people going slow and nine times out of ten people going this slow are locals - and they will have gone into a property or turned at a crossing.

Try it sometime. They win if you get angry. We all win if you're not on the wrong side of the road with veins bulging from your forehead when I'm coming the other way.

I do 75 mph and I've seen absolutely zero savings between what I drive and the double nickel - I tried it for a week and it totally SUCKED.
Maybe if I drove some small off-shore compact auto created with the ectomorphic in mind they'd be a noticeable difference.
But I don't so therefore there ain't.

Ponder this all you cerebral types; If there is really is a petroleum shortage why does NASCAR exist?

IF there is a shortage than it's being blown way out of proportion by speculation.

I see it here often enough and know how maddening that can be.

Being the trucker in this picture, let me say, that is any big city. Don't matter whether it's Daytona, Atlanta, LA, or Chicago. Yeah, just go ahead and pull in front of 80,000 Lbs. of steel and frozen pork. I watch about 4 cars ahead with one foot on the brake.

George Carlin once said, there are 2 kinds of drivers on the road, idiots and maniacs.

An idiot is anyone going slower than you.
A maniac is anyone going faster than you.
Only you are going the correct speed.

Try driving the New Jersey Turnpike in a bus with a governor on the engine that won't let you go faster than 69 mph. Traffic is going 75+, except for the grandmother in the right lane who's doing 55.

Can't pass her, because you can't accelerate enough to slip into the passing lane!

I have to admit, it harshes my mellow...

Cheers, Tim

A lot of people get much too wound up while they're driving.

First off, we're all going to get old someday. So cut the old people some slack.

Second, we all want to get old some day. Losing your temper and/or acting out while operating a few tons of machinery is not going to help with that.

Third, remember the psychos out there! Start breakin' bad with the wrong person, and you've got a problem that you are not driving away from (it can follow you). Or sit down at your table at the rest area.

Fourth, do a little arithmetic. Driving 50 instead of 60 for 2 miles takes an extra 24 seconds. What are you going to do for 24 seconds that's so important that you have to (verbally, figuratively) assault strangers on the road?

Tim has the right idea. Easy does it. That's the pro move. Why? Because you get in fewer accident that way. What's not to like about that?

I'm not a slow driver, but I generally don't drive real fast either. "Quick" yes, but rarely fast.

What I frequently do is pull over, stop, and let the fast drivers go by.

Makes us both feel better.

What really makes me feel good is when I pass them later as they are sitting in front of a State Patrol car.

Usually though, because the roads here in the Driftless Region tend to be a little winding, as a quick driver (instead of a fast driver) I usually get caught back up to them.

If you know what I mean!

Be patient or walk, getting angry and frustrated will just get someone killed.

The truck drivers in New Zealand (a very hilly and windy-road place) signal that it's safe to pass with a quick indicator blink - they can see far further ahead. And car drivers usually give a little "beep beep" like Roadrunner to say thanks. Sometimes if you're really lucky, you'll get a "no worries!" back from the truckie in the form of a HOOONNNK! I like that. It's rare these days (except for motorcyclists) to see much solidarity.

There's so much anger and impatience on the roads nowadays (I believe it's a result of society's personal debt levels, but that's not the subject) but when __it happens people come together, always and help. If only we could connect the impatience and the rage with the pain and the heartache and the handful of minutes saved by rushing.

Seems it not just a modern problem, here's a 1905 Franklin (not a steel guitar) with what looks like a good answer .....

It's a speed *limit* not a target. I quite like to drive fast at times but that's the nature of public roads - we share them with drivers of various abilities and styles. I wouldn't advise performing an unsafe manoeuvre EVER. Wait until it is safe to pass and then do so. If it is winding you up, pull over and calm down. Driving is a not a right and I've personally dealt with some horrific injuries where the images still haunt me. Getting annoyed at the driver in front impacts on your observation skills & increases your chance of an accident massively.

I'd think the governor of New Jersey would have better things to do.

In most cases, the slow poke is gonna cause a collective increase in gas consumption when he tries to do the 'honorable thing' and drives 20 mph off the current popular speed on the Interstate.

I'm not saying the speeders are right, but in this case, the slow pokes better not be going to bed, content that they've saved the environment. Those who disrupt existing traffic patterns are fools and a menace to others, whether they drive crazy fast, crazy slow, or just plain crazy.

Amazing that the slow pokes are the dead last person to use www.aaa.com and other mapping sources (challenge the info you get, aaa software makes stupid choices one quarter of the time) to discover a quiet and relaxing back way to go; with no schools, no speed traps, and no shift changes at factories (or at the catholic church). 30 miles shorter in trip distance, you save twice by going slower on secondary roads and getting there before the speeders who are fixated on using the interstate.

That's me - Camry owner.

Did you ever see the episode of Seinfeld where George has to make good time? That used to be me.

My goal was always to get in the fast lane as quick as possible so as to avoid all of the meandering and thoughtless driving occurring in the other lanes.

This past spring, I was involved in a multi-car entanglement, during rush hour, on a Friday. Soccer moms with stuff on their minds, folks like me getting off work and trying to plug into weekend plans, folks from out of state starting a weekend gataway...

...Long story short, the lane I was moving into (in the fast lane), no longer became available when everyone at least one lane to the right converged on each other. I checked up, but was doing about 63, and it was just a touch too fast - had to crank it to the left and onto the shoulder. Fishtailed right good, almost lost it twice, but managed to save it. However, during this melee, everyone else that had converged on each other still hadn't straightened themselves out, and one of them snagged my rear quarterpanel. Unfortunately for them, my Camry was a bit bigger, and they spun out.

I had never been involved in a highway bang up in my life, but this single one scared me silly...

So now I'm typically the dork in the slow lane, but I don't jump out and cut people off. I do the posted, but nothing under. I've found out the hard way that there isn't just enough reaction time (at least for a fella my age) at the higher speeds, unless you have something with monster brakes. Since I don't, I've relegated myself to the granny lane.

I've also found that I always catch up to the hurry-ups who pass me in town. All the speed in the world won't help you at all with stoplight timing.
