Anyone remember the Ozark Mountain Daredevils?

I was chatting to a couple of folk at the local blues club last night and someone mentioned this band and that they had an old cassette of them from the 70's that they wanted to transfer onto CD.

I'd forgotten all about them. I also had a cassette of one of their albums that I used to play all the time and loved it. Jackie Blue, It'll Shine When It Shines, Keep On Churnin'.....

I did a search on Limewire and found quite a few of these songs there. Gosh, they were good. I also found a song that is supposed to be the Daredevils but it sounds a lot like Loudon Wainwright III - I know he wrote it - Dead Skunk In The Middle of the Road. Did the Daredevils record this as well? It's brilliant!!

Anyone know if they're still going?

The Ozark Mtn Daredevils were a real good band. a lot of stuff going on there. you'd have a funky/country-ish tune such as "If You Wanna To Get To Heaven" and then they'd come along with pure pop stuff like "Jackie Blue" and "You Know Like I Know". i had several of their albums back in the day, my favorite was "Men From Earth".

and no, they did not do "Dead Skunk". that IS by Loudon Wainwright III.

Our band still does a couple Ozark Mountain Daredevils tunes......"Standin' on a Rock" and "Country Girl" (We try to stick with the stuff most people have never heard). Those guys were pretty decent bluegrass players too! Great band.

Howdy,

"If ya wanna git to Heaven" absolutely rocks. Love it. I always liked the slide guitar on "Jackie Blue". think I was in 5th grade when that came out.

The Car Over The Lake album was one of the finest records ever in my opinion. I don't know much about them outside of that record. Looks like I'm spending some time on YouTube again today.

I hadn't really thought about them in a very long time but I'd love to have that album again.

I was sitting by a country road in Northern California one day many years ago and a car pulled up. They guy driving rolled down the window and we chatted for a few minutes and he mentioned he was a musician. He asked me if I ever heard of "The Ozark Mountain Daredevils" and I said yeah. He said he played with them. I can't remember what he played, but we chatted for a while longer and he drove off. Other then a couple of songs that's what I know about 'em.

No need to wish! Most of their albums are for sale on cd at Amazon.com and at thier website http://www.ozarkdaredevils.com/. They also tour ocassionally
Spaceship Orion is on their self titled lp. Also known as the quilt album. I have it and also the Lost Cabin Sessions. I highly recommend both.

The first conecrt I ever went to was at a race track in Marshfield WI.

Super Concert 79

Ozark Mountain Daredevils
Black Oak Arkansas
Bad Boy
Jay Fergusen
(one other band....I cannot remember)

Picture an episode of "That 70's Show" at a concert at a bad WI speedway racetrack. I can still smell the stale beer, sun tan lotion and pot.

Jim Dandy to the Rescue !

I saw them a couple of times.. Once in 1973 and again in 1976. They were a great live band.

Norwegian Rune Walle (guitar/vocals/sitar/banjo) played with them for a while.

Back in 1984, long after the band hit their peak, some version of it played at my aunt's wedding reception in Mill Valley, CA. Or that's what I remember her telling me, anyway. I never made it to the reception, because my friend and I got lost looking for the venue and wound up eating at Mel's on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. I thought my memory of this might be a little faulty, but your story about running into the former bandmember in the same neck of the woods gives it more credence.

Tommy Aldridge was in Black Oak Arkansas, and from what I gather it was such a bad experience being in that band, that he won't talk about it today.

And the bonus is that I can practice playing my mandolin along to these songs and it sounds like it fits in with the music!

I checked out a website about them and remembered that it was THe Car Over the Lake and It'll Shine When It Shines that I had on cassette all these years ago. I might have to find them on CD now!
