Let's play the hero/anti-hero game...

Name your picks for...

1) Least favorite/most annoying "guitar hero".

2) Favorite guitar anti-hero.

3) Most slays-you-with-a-single-note-hero.

Mine (today at least):

1) Al DiMeola (greatest ratio of notes to musical point).

2) Lou Reed.

3) A toss up between Otis Rush and Pete Cosey (though, while some of his notes might slay me, others might make me feel psychically ill).

1) (I know I'm gonna get banned :) ) Roy Buchanon.
To me, Boring and nothing special. Just Cannot comprehend how for tele's talk, people even put him in the same sentences with Danny Gatton.

2) Neil Young.
I don't think people really view him as a guitarist before a singer/songwriter. I think for him and his style, he does exactly what he should with the instrument and damn well too.

3) Brad Paisley.
I love hearing the girth, power and uber-twang in his tone. Wether it be a bend, or a hard pick low note, it's always special to hear somethin from Brad!

Curt Kobain-lethargic junky chords
Tanya Rae Brown-The best rhythm guitar player since Freddie Green.
Duanne Allman-He had "the touch" when it came to slide guitar. His lead styles were succinct, articulate, and full of feel.

1) The obvious choice: Yngwie Malmsteen (though I also agree with Fred, Roy B. fits in here, too...)

2) Neil Young

3) Chuck Prophet

1. Slash - Dunno what the big deal is about this guy; competent player but
a pedestrian, average rocker.

2. Neil Young - Guy always sounds like he's just about on the edge of total
meldown.
3. Freddie King - Man, what can you say 'cept "san-ho-zay"?

I definitely don't agree with you on this one, but it's surprising how many times I've heard people on this board say exactly the opposite.

My choice

1. Eric Clapton
2. Dave Stryker
3. Roy Buchanon

I can't stand Yngwie Malmsteen. All style and no heart. Plus, he looks like one of the Festrunk Brothers from Classic SNL.

I gotta go with Frank Zappa on the anti - hero.

Tone Slayer - Angus and Malcolm Young - So simple they are genius'.

1) Ry Cooder (sorry)
2) Ed Van Halen (he's been beat up on so much that it's now uncool to actually like the guy's playing. To guitar aficionados, that's an antihero)
3) I wish I could put Miles Davis here. On guitar, I'd have to say Herb Ellis

hmm, just to be different..

Over rated - Jeff Beck. Too much hype for too little great playing. Oooh,I know I'll get flak for that one.

One noter - BB King and Albert Collins.

Hidden hero- Brad Whitford. Joe gets all the hype and the chicks, but that's Brad's solo on 'last child', one of my favorites.

2) Favorite guitar anti-hero - Gotta concur with a lot of y'all - Neil Young!

3) Most slays-you-with-a-single-note-hero - Grant Green on "Blue Breakbeats."

There are a number of guitarist that I just don't get.

Conversely, there are a number of guitarist that I just love.

Neil Young, as many have already pointed out, gets my vote as the anti-hero.

1. Stevie Ray Vaughn. The cult is more annoying than the actual man.

2. I agree.. Neil Young.

3. Roger McGuinn.. turns a simple melody into some of the most sophisticated lead breaks ever, and for me is probably one of the hardest guitarists to imitate note for note.

1. I'll second the SRV vote. He was good, lots of other guys are good. If he were still alive I doubt he would be granted the same Guitar God status.

2. Tom Verlaine, rocking that Jazzmaster. Regardless of what Richard Lloyd might let you believe there were two great guitar players in Television, man.

3. Hubert Sumlin, any note he wants to play is good enough for me.

Mine

1. John Mayer - I actually like his playing, just his persona and wanna-be affliction get to me a bit.

2. Anti-hero - Bob Dylan - that man can play him some acoustic

3. Slays me with a single note - Blind Blake

1. Joe Satriani: He can play, but he doesn't play anything worth listening to.

2. I like the Neil Young vibe. He can make some awesome, mean sounds.

3. Mike Cooley - Drive-by-Truckers. Just freakin awesome

My list may be metal-heavy, but it's what I've listened to the longest.

1. Zakk Wylde - this dude might be easier for me to listen to if he didn't have Pinch-Harmonics Tourettes.

2. +1 for Neil Young - I love how he just smears the melodies in his solos on "Ragged Glory".

3. Randy Rhoads - I don't think he played one uninspired note in his too-short career. He died at 25 years old over 26 years ago and he's still a giant in his genre.
