Ok, so who would be a better Bond?

Rhinocaster made the point in an interesting nearby thread that the this new Craig guy is probably the best Bond yet, and that has created a lot of discussion on who was/is better--Connery, Moore, Dalton, Brosnen, et al.

If it isn't any of those guys, who would be a better, or more interesting Bond?
Living or dead...

Possible suggestions:

Cary Grant
Gregory Peck
Matt Damon
Redd Volkaert (Q could design a really special Tele)

No-one who isn't British should be allowed to play Bond.

Sorry.

Sorry.
Connery is Scottish.
Lazenby is Australian.
Brosnan is Irish.
Dalton is Welsh.

I guess that leaves Moore...

As for who would have made a good Bond? Jean-Paul Belmondo in his prime. Or Alain Delon

I thought Hugh Jackman would have been a good choice, but I'm ok with Craig.

The Scots Irish and Welsh ARE British.

I think Cary Grant could have pulled it off

Sean Connery still was the best Bond

If you were able to take Sean Connery in his James Bond prime and place him in today's movies with the fast-paced action, computer enhanced grahics, and what-have-you, it would be no contest. Connery is Bond, James Bond.

Craig did a fine performance as Bond. Better then everyone since Moore who, as we all know, did it "somewhat" campy. But hey, it was how the producers wanted Bond portrayed.

Having said that, I would have liked to have seen Clive Owens as Bond. There is a darkness and suaveness to him. And I think he is British, oui?

For an even cruder Bond, how about Vinnie Jones?

Then again, maybe Nick Frost:

Some of the names suggested for the first Bond film sound rather odd by today's standards - Cary Grant, David Niven and Noel Coward. The Brits here may (or may not) be surprised to know that Bob Holness - of Blockbusters fame - was the first Englishman to play Bond back in 1957 in a South African radio version of Moonraker. It could even be argued that he was the first actor in the World to play James Bond 007.

It is often claimed that the first ever Bond was an American actor called Barry Nelson in a TV version of Casino Royale. In truth Fleming was asked to adapt the book for an America audience and the lead character became a CIA agent called Jimmy Bond and his oppo in the British Secret Service was called Clarence Lieter.

David Niven did play James Bond in the original "Casino Royale". But, then again, so did Woody Allen (young Jimmy Bond, that is).

One of the things I enjoyed most about Craig's performance is that, combined with a downplaying of all the techo-gibberish, he brought the character back nearer the gritty Bond of Ian Fleming's books. Connery played it that way, too, until all the special effects took over (and he aged out of the part, as well). Connery built the franchise.

For my money, Roger Moore nearly ruined Bond. He was the least physical (and Bond is a brute), beating Brosnan by a nose, and had little-to-none of the roguishness that made Bond such a loose cannon.

Craig is a godsend. The way things were going, I was afraid Jude Law or Hugh Grant might be cast!
