I didn't like the Carpenters when they were huge (with the exception of "Goodbye to Love"--who played the excellent guitar solo?), but Karen Carpenter had a beautiful voice, I have to admit.
...yes indeed, the "Free Design" on Enoch Light's "Project 3" label...great sounding records with a cool "psyche/folk/pop" sound, and absolutey nothing to feel guilty about... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Free_Design ...also,the aforementioned "Batdorf and Rodney" are still on the acoustic scene and performing...Rodney's dad was the be-bop trumpeter "Red" Rodney...they have GREAT vocal blend, and a strong 2 guitar sound...

Larry now look what you started ....

The Band BREAD was why we invented Punk Rock in the 70's and 80's . I still get shivers down my spine (not in a good way) when I hear them . All I can think about is hearing my older sister play their albums over and over again (her with the David Cassidy posters) in her bedroom. But then again I would not have been able to slow dance with Jill Smithees and Jean Correia at the Junior High School Dance without bands like Bread . So it's a double edged sword , a sword I'd like to plunge into my ears when I hear them play.

I think LarryF should lose his posting privileges for 2 days , for starting such a vile nostalgic thread like this .

I; too, thought this was going to be a thread about the staff of life... but; oddly enough, just yesterday I was sitting in the truck, just having arrived home from work, lingering long enough to groove out on some "Guitar man"...

When I was in Junior High, the girls always played the Carpenters at parties when they were fixin' to turn out the lights and turn ya' on to some good 'ole french kissin'... Woo-hoo!

I grew up with David Gates and Bread. Those songs, those arrangements, what's not to love? "If", "Diary", Guitar Man", Everything I Own", "Make It With You", "It Don't Matter To Me", "Down On My Knees", "Baby I'm-A Want You", "Aubrey", "Sweet Surrender", "Daughter", "The Last Time" - it takes a novelist many more words to rip your heart and guts out than these guys did within the span of a three minute song. And yeah, "Mother Freedom" rocks.

Sue me, this is syrup rock at it's absolute finest.

Another matter entirely, and well you should. No kidding, up until about a year ago, I worked with a drummer who still wore those stupid looking "artwork-displaying" shorts and the knee-high socks with the yellow stripes, just like when we were in high school. It didn't matter to him whether it was a club date or a concert venue. He didn't realize that it was embarrassing, so I never found need to call him out on it. But, gee whiz, get a clue, buy some taste. Anyway, past tense, thanks.

YESSSSS!!!!

Missed them at the time, but a friend turned me on to them a few years ago. Wonderful stuff! Great fun!

(A band called Swan Dive is carrying on that tradition... sort of.)
