Ry Cooder has a new CD out and...
... it's entitled "I, Flathead" and I think it is just the sort of thing some/a lot of y'all might really get a kick out of. It is a killer; tasty, funny, intriguing, unpredictable, warm and moving---to me, MUCH more enjoyable/musically and emotionally engaging (IMHOYMMVSTFUBFFOMG) than "My Name Is Buddy", and more consistent (though still curve-ballish/oddballish) than "Chavez Ravine". The "main character" is in the persona of a CalOkie gearhead (flathead racer), and it's another of Ry's meditations on place and time (mostly SoCal, from here and late '50s to eternity).
The name checking in "Steel Guitar Heaven" would probably amuse more than a few of you (as will the joke about Paul Bigsby's newest steel that does everything up to "...it pours ya a smoke and lights ya a drink?... Paul, think it needs a little more work!"). I think (hope) some of us are going to want to talk about it once more of us have heard (and started to digest) it. I posted this over in another forum too, and already got some reaction and talking going on. |

I have it, it rocks, Cooder has revisited his70's and 80's style and updated it. I am a Cooderaholic, I learned to play slide to his records. I was dissapointed with "Buddy", little slide, little excitment. I am glad he did this disc!

I got it a couple weeks ago and am loving the material & his playing of course. I need to get the other 2 of this trilogy now to get "the whole story'.
His interests in this time frame coincide with my own, as a kid living on the east coast my imagination evoked just the kind of So Cal imagery he goes after on "I, Flathead". Anyone get the deluxe version with the mini-novel? I'd be curious to hear how that is. |

3 or 4 songs on there that I like a whole lot. Drive Like I Never Been Hurt is one of the coolest songs ever, I like that rant at the end, and then there's the song 'Johnny Cash'!

Off the wall but in a cool, sort of follows the record, kind of way. I knew of the prior two records in the trilogy but haven't heard them. Definitely not a "guitar" record but more like a bunch of related stories/characters with Ry providing his brand of "background music" to them. |

I really like this album. It's good to have Ry singing again, these days. Nicely simple, uncluttered arrangements and playing. Oh, and he book's entertainingly loopy!
Has anyone noticed he's playing in a trio - with Saint Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner - as "Guitar-Bass-Drums", in San Fran? Wish I could see that: I'd love to be at a gig again where Ry was standing up, singing and playing electric guitar. doubt very much there'll be a tour, sadly... |

This album needs to be listened to while driving. If you happen to be in Southern California and over 50 years old, it gets even more intense. And if you can make it through the whole thing without smiling and shedding a tear or two...well...you're no kind of friend of mine.
