Covering Roy

This is for anyone who plays Roy Orbison's "Oh Pretty Woman."

Do you stick to the original timing througout the song, including the 3 count drum intro, or do you change it to 4/4 time all the way through?

This has come up for debate in my band, and I thought I'd throw it out to the Tele crowd.

If you're not sure what I'm talking about, have a listen to it and notice the 2/4 bars in various places.

I've never thought about it, I've always just played it the way I thought the record was.

I've been playing the Van Halen version (sort of) for the last 20 something years, and last week my bass player pointed out that they changed it from Roy's version.

Straight 4's. I do everything like that, if there's any timing weirdness going on. That's just to prevent any potential trainwrecks on stage. I do that with "Mystery Train" as well. I keep it straight as a judge, so the band don't think "Uhh... what's he doing now?".

Believe me, I do enough OTHER weirdness to keep them thinking "What's he doing now?", and this is just a courtesy to them to make their job a little easier!

We always do it the funky (original) way ... it's fun if you got guys that are all on the same page, quite a bit scary if not.
