Blues can't be played in daylight
Have you ever gone to a blues festival and been disappointed, no matter how good the band is, by the fact that it's outside, bright daylight, and hot? To me the blues should be inside, dark, and cool.

Disagree, I've seen ol' Delbert day and night and it was just as much fun. Saw BB King (with Delbert opening) in the daytime and it was a blast!
I've played festivals in the daytime and blew 'em up! Had a blast, though I'm not really in a blues band at all these days. |

Hmmmm, interesting. I don't think I've ever seen a blues show in the daylight. Depending on the heat, it might be doable.
Wait! Just remembered the first time I say Buddy Guy daylight. Well, a little closer to the evening. Awesome show.

While I must say that I don't enjoy Blues at festivals as much as I enjoy it at a club (Which is usually at night) I think that for me it has more to do with the fact that I find the Blues to be an intimate experience that just works better at a small venue than it does at a large, outdoor venue.
Still, there are worse ways to spend an afternoon than enjoying an outdoor Blues Festival!

The Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival starts out in the afternoon and continues past dark, so we experience both. The opening acts are often as good as the headliner, but daylight takes the focus off the stage. The scenery at Deer Lake Park is quite something, so it's easy to be distracted. Once the sun goes down and the lights come on, our attention is focused on the stage. Perhaps that's why we enjoy a night show better.

Yeah, might be more enjoyable in the dark, but give me a good band kicking ass on the stage, a cold beer, and Penthouse Pet at my side (even if she's with the other guy, LOL), and it'll be an enjoyable afternoon.
Jpwever. and while I don't smoke, I'll take a blues act in a smoky bar over one in one of those smoke-free venues or outdoors anytime. Ultimately, the blues is meant to be played in a hot, smoky bar. |

I saw Sam Chatmon, the last surviving member of the Mississippi Sheiks, play the folklife festival in DC in 1972 in broad daylight and bring the house down.
![]() Electric blues should maybe be played after dark, but acoustic music goes down well at any hour of the day or night, in my experience. |

No - actually some of my favorite times is going to a summer blues festival, like the small one they used to have here in St. Paul.

Man, somea y'alls got too many rules.
I do generally prefer a small club experience over a big stadiumish thing, even if the quality of the band is not as good, but I'm not sure daytime makes a difference.

If they're paying me cash then I can get the blues in the daytime.
I won't say that blues can't be played in daylight but I've often felt strange doing a gig while the sun is still up. Even in a bar where it's pretty dark, just knowing it's daytime doesn't quite work for me but it can be done.

Anyway, there's no right or wrong with this, just opinion. I can tell you this, I much prefer playing a hot, sweaty club in the middle of the night to playing an outdoor festival at noon!

Certain activities don't seem to go better in certain locations. Like going to a haunted house on halloween at 12 noon. The point (opinion) I was trying to make is that I much prefer listening to a blues band in a dark smoky bar vs. lawn seats on the green at noon.

i much prefer a dark, smelly gin mill but will enjoy the blues either way.
is it just me or are "festival" and "the blues" two words that shouldn't go together??

I know what you mean but yeah, I agree that it might be more of an intimate environment (of a club) versus the expanse of a festival. As opposed to daylight versus night time. This guy played a lot outside on the street in the daylight and he would have been great regardless.

Wow! I think The Man is trying to keep us down with all these rules. I've seen quite a few groups over the last few years at Sioux Falls Jazzfest that I never would have seen any other time or place. There's just something about 100,000+ people rockin away in 95 degree heat to some of the best Blues and Jazz groups on the planet. We always go early to get a spot that's close enough to see what's going on but far enough away that it's not too loud. Do you think Tab Benoit, Johnny Lang, Robben Ford, Taj Mahal, or any of the other groups coming this year are going to slack off before the sun go |
