Chris Duarte...

Well, last night I saw Chris Duarte play, and I must say.... well.... I am not sure what to say.

The dude has major chops, does not miss a note, and obviously wore out his SRV CD's, but have you ever watched someone play who makes it obvious that they love to hear themselves play?

Sometimes, I think, the best notes are the notes that are left unplayed. My opinion, but if there was ever a camp for overplaying, Duarte is first pick in the draft.

I guess the trouble I had with him was that the opening act was Chris Beard. Beard is a down-home-bluesy-blues-gristle-in-the-lampchop- hearts on fire, stomp it out blues kind of a guy. So his notes were soulful, and thick like molasses. When he got done with the songs, the audience was out of breath just hanging on the notes and waiting to hear wear the journey ended up. I had never seen or heard him before, so I was pleasantly surprised.

Then, it was like the runaway 18-wheeler took the stage, and just drove over everything in his path. Two different styles, but I know which one I preferred.

Don't get me wrong, Monster talent and seemed like a decent fellow. btw, was playing a G&L Legacy last night. Just thought he could have played less of it, and still blown us all away.

Yeah, he came to Roanoke a while back, and a buddy of mine that is reeeeally into that style of music even said that he over-did it. Playing to hear himself play is a great summary.

Oh well. Guess it takes all types.

It's been a few years since I saw him, but I recall enjoying the performance. I don't recall counting notes.

I've seen Chris play twice and I liked him both times. I had his CDs and I liked those a bit less.

He's from around here, but I heard him play in Pinedale, Wyoming.

I heard he had given up the SRV clone playing lately. I guess not.

It wasn't counting notes. It was listening to crammed notes trying to express themselves, but being packed so tightly together, they had no voice. You had to be there. He played one tune where he shut off the Marshall Stack, and played through a mic'd Chicago Blues Box amp. That was sweet like honeydew melon. He played that song, then cranked up the Marshall and got back to the shredfest.

He played the G&L through the Marshall for most of the show, then had an offset mic on that CBB. That Blues Box was awesome.

Didn't recognize his name at first, but it sounded familiar. Did a YouTube search and it came back to me: I think I saw him at the Jazz Fest, free outside show. He's amazing. They were playing a version of "Are You Experienced" if I remember...

Checked out his other videos too, he can play!

Here is a 7 minute taste. Call it a little buffet. The second tune snippet I start to get a vibe, the head starts bobbing, and then..... see if you can last all 7 minutes.

Chris has become a much different player in the last 15 years. I remember seeing him play live several times in Austin prior to his release Texas Sugar Strat Magik.... and he was showcasing a totally different talent.

I saw Chris play once at a place just off of 6th Street called ....The Elephant Room?....or The White Elephant?....something like that.... It was a total jazz gig. No rock. No SRV-infused blues. Straight jazz. So much so that he inspired me to go purchase a jazz method book at Heart of Texas Music the following day.

I also saw him play at The Steamboat on 6th Street once, and it was a total instrumental-rock show.....VERY MUCH in the style of Eric Johnson. That was also the show that some girl grabbed one of Chris's vintage Strats off the stage and took off running out the door. It was about 5 minutes after the set was over...and Chris took off running after her. He caught her about a block away. I was about 20 feet behind him....and he just took the guitar from her, without saying a word, and walked back into the club.

The current playing style that Chris displays.....well....he looses me. Very little in the way of dynamics. It's just full-blown volume and chops in your face at 100mph. I ain't saying the guy can't play...cause he sure can. It's just not my thing anymore.

Tailspin & Strat Magic been favorites for years. Nobody comes to Alaska except Johnny Winters, so I'll never see Duarte up here.

Curt Novak did some pickups for Duarte, that was enough for me to order a set, ha ha but now I'm having Curt do a few more.

Maybe he's trying to find himself? Or maybe lose the SRV clone image that he was branded with (unfairly, IMO). Anyhow, it's been at least 6 years since I saw him.
