Took My Son To Iron Maiden Last Friday...

..and he freakin LOVED it!! Hes 14 and it was his first concert...He was completely in awe. Jumping around...singing...he kept smashing into the big Harley dude next to him..Luckily he was a cool dude : ) But it was an absoulute blast to watch him rocking out to music I grew up with.

Oh..and...Maiden put on one hell of a show...Still one of the best in the business if you ask me...

Taking him to see Rush in a couple weeks!!!

Very cool! My oldest took a class offered at her school about Pop music history. She went through my CD collection and sometimes she listens to the radio stations I listen to.

OK, now your next step is to accompany him to see one of his favorite bands. It can be tough, though. I can't afford to take the family to see any big acts, but we've been to see some lower tier bands, and a few local ones. I like to support local music when I can, and took her to a CD release party for one local. There were actually three bands in the same vein, that screaming type vocal I don't care for. But it was fun. The bands were having a good time, the kids were having a good time, and I got to talk a bit with some of the players. Rest assured, even though I probably wouldn't buy a CD because I don't care for that type of music, I got an education, and the future of guitar is secure.

Took my sons to their first concert two years ago-Lamb Of God. Death metal-total noise.

Luckily I found myself a place to sit in the back and there was a bar. spent most of time outside smoking cigs. They loved it though and I was cool for doing it, the had a great time. now they scoot off to shows on their own-shooo!

They have since raided my cd collection and one of them is a pretty hot guitarist. Their tastes are actually changing after some exposure to live music.

I made a trade deal with my 17yo niece last year:
Brought her to Roger Waters, she brought me to Fall Out Boy.

I really enjoyed F.O.B.

She thought Waters was mostly noise and screaming.

Humph, Kids there days.

She was right. Roger Waters without David Gilmour is like an agitated pit bull (or Rot or whatever) without a leash. Rant, rant, rant....

On the other hand, Fallout Boy isn't bad until they shift into Cookie Monster vocal mode.

They were good for what they do. But it sure was LOUD and relentless, I can take that kind of music in small doses only.

I did enjoy Opeth who opened a whole lot. They had heavy passages, soft passages, lots of dynamics, many shades in their music. They at times reminded me of a metal version of Pink Floyd.

My friend took me this week to see his son's band play their first real gig, at the Whisky A-Go-Go. So I get to see 4 teenage bands in a row. Mostly heavy and/or punk stuff.

The best band was my friend's son's. The kid is some kind of prodigy; playing maybe a year, and taking lessons, and he sounds like he's been at it forever. He's mostly into blues and classic rock. The band is a 3 piece, and at one point I thought -- "That's what Cream would sound like, if they were starting today." At another point, I thought, "YOW, he's channeling Hendrix!"

All in all, a fun experience. I hadn't been to the Whisky in maybe 20 years, after practically living there. I gotta say, with all the memories that place brought back -- I am REALLY happy to be old!

<high fives Andy>

My boy is 14 too... he's been to tons of music, but it's always been festivals, and pretty much focused on pop, bluegrass, Americana, and some jambands. But a month or so back I took him to his first real nightclub rock show: Drive By Truckers, with the Dexateens opening. Coupla Alabama ass whuppin' good bands there. This was a Jannus Landing in St. Pete, they let kids in there; wristband for us beer drinkers. He was center stage on the rail the whole time & loved it.

I've been taking him to festivals since he was 8 months old. He loves all kinds of music, except hip hop and those Cookie Monster bands. Mostly he's been hopping into the wayback machine at youtube, checking out old Dead shows and b&w Beatles cuts ... He stays up late watching teevee, and those damn 'Groovy Sixties' compilation ads show up on the cable channel, he'll hear five seconds of some tune he likes, and then go find the artist on youtube

He watches SNL too, mostly to hear new music.... he likes Feist and Vampire Weekend, and the Foo Fighters. It's all good ... He pretty much knows more about music than any other 14yo we know. I was never into sports, & he isn't either, but we got rock & roll in common
