Top 10 Bands of Rock'n Roll
Rock'n Roll got started in the '50's. Who would be in the Top 10 category band from back then to now, keeping in mind that Rock has evolved during this period and touched on other genres like R & B?
My choices (in no particular order): Buddy Holly & The Crickets Elvis Duane Eddy Otis Redding Ray Charles James Brown Mark Knoffler & Dire Straits The Band Roy Orbison Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Doug. |

I'm going to interpret the question narrowly, and give my list of top 10 ROCK --bands that play and sound like bands, and are fantastic live acts. For instance, much as I love the Stones and consider their albums some of the greatest rock music ever, they don't make my top ten because, to my ears, they've always been a pretty inconsistent live act. So here's my take, in no particular order:
1) The Who 2) The Ramones 3) Funkadelic (yes, the ARE a rock band) 4) Radiohead 5) AC/DC 6) The Stooges 7) Booker T. and the MG's (not exactly a rock band, but so good it doesn't matter). 8) The JB's circa '71 (see explanation for #7) 9) Sly and the Family Stone 10) Sabbath |

I'm glad someone wised up and mentioned the Beatles.
Mine.....includes a couple of individuals just because it should: Beatles The Who Rolling Stones U2 R.E.M. Guns N Roses (sadly, ONLY for Appetite, but it gets 'em a spot here) Elvis Presley After that, I dunno. Big Star, maybe? Guided By Voices? Booker T would be up there, since they did so much great Stax stuff Not sure. |

I am sure a lot of people are going to disagree with me here:
1. Tool 2. Porcupine Tree 3. King Crimson 4. Strapping Young Lad 5. Helmet 6. Clutch 7. The Tea Party 8. Red Hot Chili Peppers 9. Led Zeppelin 10. Opeth I know I should put the Beatles and a bunch of other bands- but this is what I've loved the most over the years. At the moment Clutch, Porcupine Tree and Helmet are my staples.

Gotta agree with your choices except the Byrds. I'll change that one to my favorite band, The Black Crowes. I know its Top 10, but I gotta put Cream in there too.
