Just played the most import gig of my life.

My bass player and myself just got back from elementary school where we played our songs for three or four classes of 9 to 12 year olds.

I took the John Deere tele I built (The Tractorcaster) and D-bone took his stand up bass.

We thought we would play a couple songs, but they kept us playing for over an hour !!! It was great. They sang and danced and asked all kinds of great questions....here's hoping we a some future Tele pickers coming along.

Thanks guys. I absolutely loved it.

I prefer to play country, rockabilly music, but I guess I'm going to have to brush up on the songs that are in guitar hero. We had a bunch of requests for a lot of those songs.

Best request though, one little guy wanted to know if we knew the "Star Wars" theme. I apologized and asked if there was another song he like us to play so this 8 or 9 year old says "How about Johnny Cash?"

Congratulations.

It's these types of gigs where a perfomer reallly meets their mettle: shows for real people - seniors, kids, families, etc. Being cool isn't an option.

I remember reading somewhere that Freddie Mercury, consummate performer that he was in most other situations, had terrible stagefright if he had to play for a small group of kids.

They are the most important gigs.

I went to my wife's school, and talked about being a musician as a "career". According to my wife (school councelor), I was the most popular with most students' opinions.
Geez, where were these guys when I was going to school?!

I organized the Blues in the Schools program for the Phoenix Blues Society for a few years and played quite a few of them when I couldn't get someone to play them or on the couple of occasions that the "musicians" didn't show up... It was a lot of fun for a while.

I've done a couple of elementary school musical show-and-tells, the most recent just a week ago. The kids just eat it up. These and the nursing home gigs are the most important ones for me, beyond the recording sessions, high pay festivals etc.

Maybe the most important playing I ever did was at my mother's bedside when she died. She always loved to hear her family around, loved to hear old hymns, and that's exactly what she got as she left this world for the next. If there's ever any doubt as to why we play, this puts it to rest. The why may take years to realize, but eventually it is revealed.

Pay it forward, pay it back.
