NY Mets fire Willie Randolph:

Looks like this is where I start rooting for the Phillies and St. Louis Cards to run away with the NL East and the Wild Card....

I'm hoping the Mets finish near the bottom and Omar Minaya gets the axe at the end of the season.

Poor guy had that hanging over his head all season . He didn't acquire the players during the off season. He'll be hired next year by someone next season.

I think that Randolph was treated with a tremendous amount of disrespect in this situation. Fly 3000 miles, WIN the game and then get fired. Amazing...

He'll land on his feet, so to speak. Maybe managing the Mariners next year?

Chet: The Cards will overtake the Cubs for the NL Central! When a team's winning, it's the players. When they're losing, it's the manager!

I think when your "firing" involves still getting paid millions of dollars to do nothing, it's a pretty soft landing...

A classic example of overpaid prima donna players with contracts that keep them from being fired so the nice-guy manager takes the hit.
The entire team has under achieved since the middle of last season. I blame Minaya for bringing in Rickey Henderson to coach- that started the tailspin. He got into Reyes' head.

I don't see that happening- hopefully Lou Pinella will keep the ship going in the right direction although you can't put it past Tony LaRussa to get the Cards up there.

If you ask me, the whole organization at the TOP needs to go.....what kind of owner would ALLOW a GM to do something so classless? The apple don't fall far from the tree.....

To be fair- Willie put his foot in his mouth for some reason by criticizing the Mets TV network a couple of weeks ago. I don't know where that came from. He should've kept his mouth shut to all the media about it.

It was the beginning of the end.

Don't misunderstand me.....Willie should have been fired IMO...he's done a not-so-great job. But the MANNER in which it was done puts on display for the whole world the class (or lack thereof) of the entire Mets organization. They've managed to take this whole thing from a simple situation where a change was justified, to a big deal and now it's "poor Willie" time.....not too smart.

Well, for the last week or so the Mets couldn't score more than one run against the Padres for 4 straight games and lost those games 2-1. Then Bigmouth Billy Wagner blows 3 straight saves after that.

That wasn't Willie's fault- it's all on the players and Omar Minaya. That's what Minaya gave Willie to work with.

They paid those guys multi millions of dollars to do a job and they haven't done it since a year ago.

This team deserves to be last place.

I like Willy, but how he didn't get fired after last year's historic collapse still amazes me. Even if he is a scapegoat, the axe should've fallen sooner.

Maybe everyone's right- Willie should've:

Got out there and hit for these bums so they could've got a lead last week. He should know that even though they're getting paid millions of dollars that they're in a slump! That includes:
Jose Reyes
Luis Castillo
David Wright
Carlos Beltran
Carlos Delgado
Brian Schnieder
Endy Chavez
etc..etc..etc...

He also should've went out there and pitched when the starters got in trouble cause the bullpen sucks lately.

He also should've let Bigmouth Billy Wagner rest so he wouldn't blow those three saves last week. He could've gotten those saves for him.

Ain't that what a good manager does?

What was the matter with Willie??

I kinda knew this was coming, but to do it at night time that's a little surprising. Thought the Met's would probably wait until the All-star break

COmpletely classless action. I kind of figured Willie would be gone and in my mind it was just a matter of time. Putting off the inevitable may have been the reason they did it the way they did (jerks!) but it may induce some talk in the locker room and get their butts playing again.

Listen to me! I'm a freakin' CUBS fan. have been since about 61.
I can only hope they don't have another meltdown. They seem pretty good this year and are actually playing with heart and like they actually WANT to win.

I hope they play worse than they have. It'll serve them right (the team and ownership). They both suck.

I heard Steve Phillips (former GM for the Mets) saying that one of the problems is the Mets have a culture that does not enforce a chain of command...that everyone in the organization has complete and equal access to everyone above them....like the players can bypass the manager and go straight to the GM with gripes, etc.....which just re-enforces my earlier comment about their leadership at the TOP....

What a joke

I grew up a Met's fan in the sixties when the highlight was Ed Kranepool on first - nothing will ever compare to the 69' season. Now it's back to Casey - " Does anybody here know how to play this game."

I've been so busy today I actually didn't hear this news until I read this board. I'm a lifelong Mets fan. I consider the way the way Mets management handled this to be a complete disgrace. Randolph deserved to be treated better. Many of the players have been doing absolutely nothing to deserve their ridiculous salaries, and Randolph is clearly a scapegoat. Oh well, losing, heartache and disappointment is nothing new to Mets fans.

Howdy,

I wonder if the Mets fired coach Tom Nieto as well. I like him. I remember when he was a catcher with Little Rock in '82 (St. Louis' AA team at the time).
