Dutch NL Holland jam - songs?

OK, we've picked a date and a place... now (again!) we need to work on a song list.

It seems that you guys have a very hard time coming up with songs you like to play. Just think about it - it's NOT that hard.

Pick 2 or 3 songs, and write down the name of the song, and what key you would like to play it in. Email your selections to me (jhundt@wanadoo.nl) and I will try to print up some charts. Maybe even make a play list...

Some of us weren't happy with the last jam, because too many guitar players played too much of the time. Eppo suggested this:

Quote:
... 2 or 3 playing together is in my opinion no problem.

Let's get some simple songs, so we can jam around and improvise
fat licks.
Iif we want to do some simple songs we can jam with and improvise - great! But which simple songs do you want to do?

And who wants to decide who may play, and who may not?

C'mon everybody - send in your song suggestions!

Firstly a bump. I've already given my list in Jon's previous thread. I'll copy and paste it here and add the keys.

I'd just like to add that the simpler the song, the better, i.e. the less changes, bridges, middle-8s etc. the better for a jam. As long as everyone takes turns on the lead breaks and follows some song dynamics it'll be great.

As Jon said, "a mess, but a FUN mess"...

-Rockin' in the Free World (G)
-Pink Caddillac (A)
-The Joker (F)
-Folsom Prison Blues (E)
-Cocaine (E)
-All Along the Watchtower (C)
-The Spider & the Fly (E)
-Word Up (F# E D E F# - that's the chord progression and since they're all major chords, I'm not quite sure what key that makes it in...)

Good one Angelo.

We had a few suggestions for country tunes from Jos, too.

And a brilliant suggestion from Gerrit - Needles and Pins (one of my all-time faves).

So - come on guys - what do you want to play?

Just some suggestions for others to play:

Substitute by the Who is perhaps an option.
Hang on Sloopy The McCoys (3 chords)
Turn Turn Turn By the Byrds (3 chords)

Pieces by Sum 41 like this

intro: Em C G D

Em C G
I tried to be perfect, but nothing was worth it
D
I don't believe it makes me real
Em C G
I thought it'd be easy, but no one believes me
D
I meant all the things that I said.

C G
If you believe it's in my soul
D
I'd say all the words that I know
C G
Just to see if it would show
D C
That I'm trying to let you know
Em
That I'm better off on my own.

Em C
This place is so empty
G
My thoughts are so tempting
D
I don't know how it got so bad
Em C
Sometimes it's so crazy
G
That nothing can save me,
D
But it's the only thing that I have.

C G
If you believe it's in my soul
D
I'd say all the words that I know
C G
Just to see if it would show
D C
That I'm trying to let you know

That I'm better off on my own.

Em C G
I tried to be perfect it just wasn't worth it

Nothing could ever be so wrong
Em C
It's hard to believe me

It never gets easy
D
I guess I knew that all along.

C G
If you believe it's in my soul

A few I can (just about) sing if neccesary:

- Crossroads (in A)
- Thrill Is gone (in C)
- Backdoor Man (A)
- Road House Blues (E)
- Voodoo Child (E)
- Red House (A)
- Black Magic Woman (Dm)
- Crawlin King Snake (E)

I'll try and think of something non-blues as well.

Could anyone lend me an amp, or could I hire one from the Venue? I'll be coming by train from Brussels.

Looking forward to this one,

Steve

good work, Steve... looking forward to seeing you again. We'll see if someone has an extra amp; there are none to rent because we're not using a rental studio this time, but the lobby of Paul's work place.

So - can someone bring an amp for Steve to use?

(BUMP)

so no one wants to suggest any songs?...

...and there we'll be standing around with 15 Teles and red-hot tube amps rarin' to go... and we'll all look around the room and say "so...what do you guys wanna play - blues in A?"

doesn't anyone want to suggest a song or two? Maybe blues... maybe country... maybe classic rock, or current rock.

Maybe some Blof, or Gordon, or Andre Hazes songs... Maybe some Herman Brood (my personal all-time #1 favorite rock'n'roll hero) or Lou Reed?

How 'bout Bryan Adams, Ryan Adams, Adam and the Ants, the Beach Boys, or the Beatles, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Big Brother, Big Bill Broonzy, Booker T, Credence Clearwater, the Clash, Crazy Horse, the Damned, Bob Dylan, Elvis, Eddie and the Hot Rods, Freddie and the Dreamers, the Flaming Groovies, the Greatful Dead, Golden Earring, Eddie Hinton, Hot Chocolate, Louis Jordan, John Lee Hooker, King Curtis, Curtis Mayfield, Mott the Hoople, Moby Grape, Bob Marley, the Nits, the New Barbarians, Roy Orbison, Buck Owens, Pink Floyd, Queen, Suzie Quattro, Radiohead, Bruce Springsteen, the Sweet, T Rex, Ernest Tubb, UFO, U2, Gene Vincent, the Who, or Frank Zappa...

... just a few suggestions. All I want is the name of a song you would like to play, and what key you would like to play it in.

If you don't want to post it here, mail me at jhundt@wanadoo.nl.

OK, I'll bite ...

You say Herman Brood, I say Saturday Night (in D)

You call Ryan Adams, I give you Everybody Knows (in F) - the electric live version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVVB2Xq65xQ

Hey, I called that one last time and chickened out - have to redeem myself!

Steve Earle - let me come up with a good one ...

Hell, Jon, your list is so big, it's a mer à boire ... Curtis Mayfield! Now I gotta go and put him on ...

OK, different subject. Steve, you just come by train, there will be a lot of amps around. I'll bring two so that there's always one or two spares.

Another one - barbecue afterwards ... anyone happen to have a big charcoal grill that can take at least 15 hamburgers at a time? And is able to stow it in his car next to the two amps and five teles that you're bringing?

The first day I came to Holland in '77 or '78 we got picked up at the airport and driven to our holiday bungalow (that's a whole story right there), and I saw a big graffiti on the railway bridge: Wild Romance. I was intriqued, having never heard this name before. Next day we stopped in at Ariola Records in Haarlem, everywhere we looked was Herman Brood this and Herman Brood that. I picked up an LP and really liked it. I loved how he used his voice - he didn't have a beautiful voice or great technique, but man what a delivery. Crazy lyrics, and fantastic phrasing that put many native English singers to shame. And the whole street-wise image, bashing a few chords on the Yamaha piano with a real hot band behind him. Lots of musical reference (and reverence) to Mose Allison and Otis Redding...I bought several LPs, anything I could find actually. Saw him play in SF, I was probably the only one in the room who knew all the songs. Saw him 2 or 3 times here, too. Towards the end he got pretty whacky, but always amusing. He did a long interview when he was trying to 'clean up and dry out' the whole time he had a parrot sitting on his head... got arrested for shooting a gun out of a moving train... what a guy!

Danny L was a darn good player, though I never liked those amps he used (can't remember the brand). Later Danny was replaced by Jan (?) Hollestelle, he was pretty good too, with that big old Gretsch...

Good one, Angelo! At earlier jams, we mostly kept it to 'no upstaging, leave breathing room for others, don't pick up/use someone else's gear without asking' ... there may have been some mention of turning it down

Rule 22: 'Don't throw up in the bathrooms' - I would like to add 'Don't throw up on the barbecue either'. Actually, those carpet tiles are brand new, too ...

Ok guys, this post is a bit quiet for my liking. Where's the sense of anticipation? If it works with s*x, shouldn't it work for a jam? And if it's true that music feeds the soul, let's also think about how we're gonna feed our bellies.

There was talk of a BBQ, if I remember well, so since we have the music part (more or less) together, let's try and get the food & drink part equally thought out (more or less...).

My suggestion would be that every player at the jam brings a twelve-pack of beer and something to put on the cooker (chicken, beef, sausages, lobster, he!! whatever). All the rest is optional (including the strippers and apart from the BBQ and its fuel - sorry I can't be of any help on the BBQ...).

Is there refrigeration on the premises?

Otherwise, is there a supermarket not far?

Whaddaya say?

Well Angelo, I share your sense of anticipation, you eager beaver!

Why, let's say you take care of the strippers and the s*ks, and I'll start rummaging around for a barbecue ... Like the idea of everyone bringing a case of beer (and a designated driver or BOB), it's hard for me to guess what everyone likes to drink -- so let me take care of some soft-drinks, coffee and tea, and get in touch with a butcher close by that can provide us with some dead cows (sometimes they rent out big charcoal grills too). Ten or fifteen euro per head will get you a lot of burgers. Does anyone have one of these cheap party tents that we could put over the BBQ?

Refrigeration: yes, one big one right in the hall, and I can rustle up a few smaller ones somewhere in the building. Supermarket: yes, a Bas or Dirk or maybe Edah in nearby Overschie, but - even better - a very big Sligro/Ven around the corner.

I'll shoot a quick e-mail to Jon and Vunz to get the starting time straight - get back to the group (pent-up in anticipation) in this thread ...

One last song suggestion ... Song 2 by Blur? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0Xl0ZEKJzo

Hey Angelo - it IS a bit quiet over here, isn't it? I'm sure everyone is excited, it's just that we don't like to show too much enthusiasm over here in Holland. Our number one rule of behavior is to 'act normal'...

Well, I don't know how together the music is at the moment. We had a few suggestions (many of them from yourself), but then the well dried up and the spring stopped flowing and the tap turned off. I guess we'll just get down there and see what happens...

Hey Gerrit, thanks for the offer, I'll take it up. Sloterdijk is very easy for me to get to so it would be perfect.

I guess we should now wait and find out the start time and arrange to meet a Sloterdijk based on that.

Last Dance With Mary Jane and Whollotta Rosie are great choices, Vincent.

And Jon, no wonder I don't get out much when I'm in Holland - I find it very challenging to act normal...
