hey this has been bugging me for years. does anyone know why charlie watts always neglects his hi hat when he hits a snare?? is he still that uncoordinated or is that some weird stylistic choice?

I remember reading something about this a long time ago. Because it is not necessary. By not hitting the snare with the hi-hat, then the snare sounds better. something like that.

I think it's just a touch/feel/detail thing, and it's part of his signature sound now. I've always liked it. |

I've always dug Charlie Watts. He has a big SNAP to his snare hit that most others don't have. His drumming really fits the Stones sloppy style in that he can sound sloppy, but that's totally misleading. He's tighter than anyone but he's between all the slop (like in "Start Me Up"). Maybe nobody understands what I'm talking about....but it's something I hear.
In a weird way, I find the guy in AC/DC very similiar (thought that bands not really sloppy).

My good friend sings in a band locally and she's pulling her hair out trying to get the bass player to get the concept that you can still play 'in time' and play 'around the time' at the same time. He doesn't get it at all. Conceptually to his mind if you aren't right on top of the beat then you aren't playing in time. It's just a tuff idea for some folks. I think out of all the aspects of music, rhythm is the one that is most closely related to a persons individual personality. Everybody has their own unique rhythms in how they speak, walk, eat, you name it. And to try and get someone to change the way they feel rhythm is like asking them to change who they are as a person. Not easy.

It's on their album "Stripped" recorded in 1995, song is "Slippin' Away"
I have it on several of my playlists, just never get tired of it, and I don't think I would ever try to cover it. "First the sun, and then the moon, one of them will be 'round soon..." Last edited by Capperdan; June 16th, 2008 at 08:16 PM. Reason: Had to add these lyrics |
