Best Buy??????
A buddy of mine just sent me this email; is this the way it's always been there?
I've bought several items there but have never had to return anything..... http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors...buy-refund.htm |

They started that policy a couple of years ago and it applies mostly to items that people buy for special occasions, then return.
People would buy big screen TVs for the Super Bowl then return, buy camcorders for their kids' graduations or weddings, or people would be GPS units for a vacation, then return it when they got back. I can understand their point in charging the fee but they need to do a better job telling people about the fee before they make the purchase. Jim |

And what about lawn mowers? I was talking to a guy working at Home Depot. He says every September, they get about 10 lawn mowers returned. They were obviously well used in some cases. They give full refunds, then have to resell them with a 10~20% mark-down.

Best Buy is Worst Buy, My wife bought a lap top from them. After several months she noticed that it would not work on battery. She took it in to them. We did not buy into their over priced warrantee, which provided nothing anyway. The machine came with a one year manufacturer's warrantee. The so called geek squad would do nothing, though they did threaten to call the police when we persisted. They said we needed to take it up with the manufacturer but that they would send it to the manufacturer for us and it would take two to three weeks. A week later they called and it was ready. Same thing happened, would not work on battery and to boot, it would not work when plugged in. Back it went and supposedly back to the manufacturer. A week later they called. Long story short, we did this three times and each time the same thing happened. The fourth time they refused to do anything further. So my wife got on the phone with the manufacturer and they helped her out. They sent her a new battery and did other diagnostics over the phone. They also did a check for her and turned up the fact that there was no record of her computer ever having been sent to any of their facilities. If you need service from a Best Buy store, you are going to get nothing but agita. Don't buy anything there and if you do never, ever deal with their service people, they are terrible and it appears to me to be driven from the top of the corporation.

When I used to manage a stereo storee in the 80's we had a guy come in 1 day before halloween and buy all our biggest speakers amps gor about $4000 worth of stuff. Some friends knew the guy and said he was planning a big Halloween party and there were even flyers he had printed $5 admission fee.
So a few days later he brings the system back saying its too loud and his wife is mad cause the speakers took up all the room in the living room. Well I knew he used that system for that party so I showed him the flyer and knew people that went and saw all that gear at his party. So I just bottom lined him and said you just got this for that party and you cant return it. He looked at me all strange and said why not? I said well you dont go over to K-Mart get a new pair of underwear and crap in em and take em back do ya? He looked all puzzled and said no of course not. SO I just said well there you go enjoy your new stereo system. hahahah

I hate potentially silly rules.
When you make a rule, you have to follow it therefore you need to be really careful when you make a rule. I could understand giving a manager the power to charge a restocking fee in a situation where the customer is abusing a privilege but charging 15% on everything is crazy. My mom is 75 and she just bought a garmin GPS (with my help) at Best Buy. If a 75 year old woman were to return a GPS unit in 24 hours because she could not read the fonts on the unit or understand the voice prompts....I would say that the return is very legit. I cannot imagine keeping $38 based on the $249 purchase. That would really stink. If MF.com or Guitar Center can grant 30 days home trial on most anything, the Best Buy decision makers are sleazy. John

Circuit City has a similar policy. This is nothing new. And in both chains, the policy doesn't apply if you get a defective product and exchange it within the time period for the same item.
I'm in favor of it. A policy like this helps keep prices low and helps prevent abuse. |
