Stay-cation

Any one else planning on a Stay-cation this year?

We usually go overseas but I think we will stay right here in Maine this year.

Bar Harbor - 2 nights
Southwest Harbor - 2 nights
Camden - 1 night
Pemaquid Point - 1 night
Boothbay Harbor - 2 nights
Portland - 1 night

Looking forward to this one too.

I've been on a staycation since I got rear-ended by a truck. It's been almost a year now. I'm lookin' to end it, though. Got some job applications out now.

Our last few "vacations" have been home games.

I already had two on the books from the end of last year, so I'm committed at this point. And there's out-of-state festival gigs in August and September--who knows how much those will cost by the time they roll around.

I am forgoing travel for Thanksgiving or Christmas this year though.

when i was working full-time, i took a lot of stay-cation time -- just hanging out at the house doing stuff i'd been wanting to do for months! now that i'm retarded, uh, i mean retired, it's like being on stay-cation all the time.

spend your money where your heart...and butt..is....that's my motto.
Arlo,...location: down by the river in a van?...so, is that how you afford those overseas trips? lol.... somehow, I just knew it wasn't true!
I just spent two nights and 3 days in Austin. I saw Redd Saturday afternoon, and got my lesson in guitar humility. I tried to learn a little bit about playing, too...but his hands don't reveal much! Must get closer...
Money flies out of the hand these days. I could have had a flight to Hawaii and 5 nights paid for with what I spent down there. OF course, I would have had to have left the wife at home! LOL... That would have led to HUGE expenses upon my return, right?
AS the judge said to Ray...."I think it's cheaper to keep her!" Whoopee!

I finally moved to the city where I want to live, so everyday is like a vacation for me. I was a habitual tourist that decided to move here. I like to travel, but it's not in the cards this year.

Some people have to drive all the up from New York City for that vacation!

Maybe you aren't going very far, but it doesn't sound like you're "staying" anywhere too long.

My Dad grew up in Portland and we used to go to visit thereabouts--always loved it, too.

I think all the shore points will be buzzing this year. We might take a run up the eastern seaboard but I doubt we will make it past Boston. If gas prices were lower we may have planned to go a good bit further.

i think you speak for many on this. everybody i know is cutting back on trips unless you can make it home overnight. besides gas, rooms will eat you up nowadays. consequently, everybody's sticking closer to home, so the competition locally for even crappy gigs is intense.

but i digress! i'm gonna take a stay-cation here in the Woodshed trying to learn PowerTools.

We'll be staying next week for 9 days at a beach house on Minot Beach in Scituate Mass. My wifes aunt couldn't rent it that week and she will let us stay there. But no long driving trips this year ...

Just spent a week in South Nags Head. Once we got there, didn't turn a wheel. Two minute walk down the beach to Charlie Oliver's pier, as pleasant a place to spend a day fishing as I could want.

I live in a beach resort town, and we gig on Saturdays, so getting away for a vacation can be difficult. Last summer, I did make it out to Colorado for a friend's wedding, and spent ten days (the whole band took that one weekend off).

By choice, we're not gigging quite as much this summer as we have in years past, we'll average two gigs a week (it's been as much as five, a few years ago!). Playing that much, while great for the wallet and the chops, meant that by September we were all utterly spent! Won't be that bad, this year, instead I'll be utterly broke.

I ought to be able to get some bus driving work, so it won't be THAT bad.

One thing I'm hoping to do is to take some of those mid-week days and go camping up in the Appalachians. I really need to get away from the beach (and the flat, chicken-farm-filled interior of the Delmarva Peninsula!)...

Cheers, Tim

We go to a Sonoma State beach every Fathers Day and camp on the beach for four days. This will be are fifth or sixth year. It's only three hours away towing a trailer, so I guess it's a semi-stay-cation.

I thought I was going on a permanent vacation (see related thread) but it looks like I made the cut. Or didn't make the cut? Whatever, I'm still employed...

I had two weeks off though, and I'm about bored out of my mind. Oh well, back to work Monday. I might take two more at the end of the summer, but we'll see... definitely not going anywhere as I'm trying to move into a cheaper place and need some cash for that.

Stay-cation? Hell yeah! This is the view out my kitchen window. Banana farm in the mist. Winter 2008.

The local water supply dam is under that cloud - water's warmer than the air this time of year at night so it's foggy up that valley.

See the squiggly line just under the "Gold Coast" - that's where these photos are at.

In the latest issue of Ready Made Magazine they list ten suggestions for a Stay-cation. It's pretty funny. It might be on their web site.

For me, we're taking two trips to Jackson Hole, WY. One a long weekend and the other a week with family. One of the bands is playing a festival in western Colorado, so that'll be a three day camping trip. Other then that, we're staying close to home.

Stay-Cation's all I ever wanted.......

Since moving here to Tahlequah, Oklahoma, my life is, essentially, a looooong vacation.

Places to fly fish? Check. The Upper Illinois River (and my little fishin' hole at No Head Hollow) is just minutes from my home. There's the tailwater of the lower river below the Tenkiller Ferry Dam for trout, too. Oh, and of course, there is Lake Tenkiller itself. And the Barron Fork, and so on and so forth.

Places to shoot? Check. There's a shooting range on the Cherokee Wildlife Area and it takes me a whopping 15 minutes to get there.

Places to hunt? Check. In addition to the above, there are other Wildlife Management Areas near town, and squirrel season is on again, so........

Places to cycle? Check. All kinds of backroads here for road biking. Lots of dirt roads for the mountain bike, too.

Places to play at and people to jam with? Check.

I can have all of the fun I can handle right here in Cherokee County, Oklahoma. No need for me to leave to do the stuff I like to do. Besides, home is where where my guitars are, as another already eloquently pointed out.

I will be going back out to California in a couple of weeks, but I'll be working while I'm there, so it isn't really a "vacation." But the "work" I'll be doing is shooting photos and fly fishing for one of my magazine writing gigs, so I guess it is kind of a vacation, after all. If the point of going wasn't largely work related, I'd stay right here where I am.

And I'd do that even if gas wasn't $3.85 a gallon.

-JP
